Can Muslim men and women be friends?

Question 1134

Question

Is it haram for Muslim men and women who are not related to be friends, study together, or spend time together?

Summary of answer

Friendship between Muslim men and women is halal. The Quran calls believing men and women protecting friends (awliyāʾ) of one another (9:71), the Prophet ﷺ regularly visited Umm Sulaym and Umm Ayman, Abu Bakr and Umar kept up those visits after him, and Umm al-Dardāʾ taught men and women in the great mosque of Damascus. Such friendships are guided by respect, truthfulness about feelings, faithfulness to spouses, and care to avoid secluded situations that invite harm.

Muslim men and women study side by side, work on the same teams, volunteer at the same food banks, and grow up as neighbors. Many wonder whether a friendship across genders is allowed, or whether even a conversation is haram. The answer from the Quran and the life of the Prophet ﷺ is reassuring. Friendship between Muslim men and women is halal. The Quran itself calls believing men and women friends of one another, and the first Muslim community was full of such bonds.

Is it haram to be friends with the opposite gender?

The Quran describes the community of believers this way:

وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَٰتُ بَعۡضُهُمۡ أَوۡلِيَآءُ بَعۡضٖۚ يَأۡمُرُونَ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِ وَيَنۡهَوۡنَ عَنِ ٱلۡمُنكَرِ

“The believing men and the believing women are protecting friends of one another. They urge what is good and forbid what is wrong.”

Quran 9:71

The word awliyāʾ (أولياء) means close friends, allies, and supporters. The verse places men and women together in one circle of loyalty, care, and shared work for good. The Quran also gives the purpose of human diversity:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَٰكُم مِّن ذَكَرٖ وَأُنثَىٰ وَجَعَلۡنَٰكُمۡ شُعُوبٗا وَقَبَآئِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوٓاْۚ إِنَّ أَكۡرَمَكُمۡ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ أَتۡقَىٰكُمۡ

“People, We created you from a male and a female and made you nations and tribes so that you may come to know one another. The most honored of you in the sight of Allah is the most mindful of Him.”

Quran 49:13

Did the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions have friends of the opposite gender?

They did. The Prophet ﷺ regularly visited Umm Sulaym in her home in Medina. When someone asked him why, he said:

«إِنِّي أَرْحَمُهَا، قُتِلَ أَخُوهَا مَعِي»

“I feel tenderness for her. Her brother was killed at my side.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 2844

He also visited Umm Ayman, the woman who had cared for him as a child. After his death, Abu Bakr said to Umar, “Come, let us visit Umm Ayman as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to visit her.” When they arrived she wept, and they wept with her (Sahih Muslim 2454). Another woman of Medina, Umm Sharīk, kept a house so generous that the Prophet ﷺ described her as “a woman whom my Companions visit” (Sahih Muslim 1480a).

Friendships also took the form of counsel. Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr records in al-Istīʿāb that Umar valued the judgment of al-Shifāʾ bint ʿAbd Allāh, a woman of learning who had taught others to write, and at times entrusted her with matters of the market.

Did men and women learn together in early Islam?

The mosque of the Prophet ﷺ was a place of learning for both. Women attended his teaching so faithfully that they asked him for an extra day of their own, since the men were taking up so much of his time (Sahih al-Bukhari 101).

In the generation after, Umm al-Dardāʾ the younger taught hadith and fiqh in the great mosque of Damascus, and the caliph ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwān is reported to have sat among her students. Centuries later, Karīma al-Marwaziyya (d. 1070) taught Sahih al-Bukhari in Mecca to men who came from across the Muslim world. Mohammad Akram Nadwi’s al-Muḥaddithāt documents thousands of such women teachers (Who were the great women scholars of Islam?). Scholarship across genders was ordinary Muslim life.

What are the boundaries of friendship between men and women?

Some scholars discourage close friendships across genders altogether, out of concern that they lead to temptation. That caution is a recognized view, and a person who prefers it should be respected. The guidance of the texts themselves is more specific, and it shapes good friendship:

  • Avoid seclusion that invites harm. The Prophet ﷺ said that a man should not be alone with a woman without a close relative present (Sahih al-Bukhari 5233). Classical jurists defined this seclusion (khalwa) as privacy where no one else can enter. Public places, open offices, and groups are outside it.
  • Keep your gaze and your words respectful. The Quran asks men and women alike to lower their gaze (24:30–31), meaning they should not look at each other with desire. Speech should be kind and clean.
  • Be truthful about feelings. If a friendship turns romantic, acknowledge it rather than hide it (Is having a crush haram?), and if marriage is possible, pursue it honorably (Is dating haram in Islam?).
  • Honor marriages. A friendship that a spouse would find hurtful, or that holds secret intimacy, wrongs that spouse.
  • Never tolerate harassment. Unwanted attention, pressure, or touch is haram in any setting.

How should parents and communities view these friendships?

With trust and guidance. The Quran commands, “Avoid much suspicion” (ٱجۡتَنِبُواْ كَثِيرٗا مِّنَ ٱلظَّنِّ, Quran 49:12). Young people who are trusted, taught, and listened to make wiser choices than young people who are watched with suspicion.

A closing word

The Prophet ﷺ said, “A person follows the way of his close friend, so let each of you consider whom he befriends” (Sunan Abi Dawud 4833, graded hasan by al-Albani). The measure of a friend is whether they bring you closer to goodness. May Allah bless you with friends, men and women alike, who remind you of Him and help you grow.

And Allah knows best. والله أعلم

Frequently asked questions

Is it haram to talk to the opposite gender online?

No. Conversation online follows the same guidance as conversation in person: kindness, respect, and truthfulness. Be careful with strangers, and never share images or information that could be used to harm you.

Is it haram for a married person to have friends of the opposite gender?

Friendship is permitted, and faithfulness to one's spouse comes first. Friendships that are open, known to your spouse, and free of secret intimacy honor the marriage.

Is it haram to be alone with a friend of the opposite gender?

The Prophet ﷺ advised against a man and a woman being secluded together (Bukhari 5233). The jurists understood this as privacy behind closed doors; a café, a classroom, an office, or a public walk is no seclusion.

What if I develop feelings for my friend?

Feelings are natural and blameless. Be truthful with yourself, and if marriage is possible and wished for by both of you, move toward it honorably.
