Is dating haram in Islam?
Question 1008
Question
Is it haram for Muslims to date, and how can two people get to know each other before marriage in a way that pleases Allah?
Summary of answer
Getting to know a future spouse is halal, and dating with marriage in mind is a sound way to do it. The Prophet ﷺ told a man who had proposed to go and see the woman, so that love might last between them (Tirmidhi 1087), and the Quran permits honorable words between those who hope to marry (2:235). Honesty, consent, meeting in public, and keeping intimacy for the nikah make dating a path toward a blessed marriage.
Answer
الحمد لله Praise be to Allah.

Young Muslims who hope to marry face a real question: how do you come to know the person you might spend your life with? Many have been told that any meeting before marriage is haram. The Sunnah teaches otherwise. Getting to know a future spouse is halal, and dating with marriage in mind, truthfully, respectfully, and in public, is a sound way to do it. The Prophet ﷺ himself sent a suitor to go and see the woman he hoped to marry, so that love might grow between them.
Is dating haram in Islam?
The word “dating” covers many things. In its most common meaning among Muslims, two people spend time together to learn whether they want to marry. Islamic law knows this stage as the proposal (khiṭba, خطبة), and it has always allowed the two people to see each other and talk.
When al-Mughīra ibn Shuʿba told the Prophet ﷺ that he had proposed to a woman, the Prophet ﷺ asked him to go and see her first:
«انْظُرْ إِلَيْهَا فَإِنَّهُ أَحْرَى أَنْ يُؤْدَمَ بَيْنَكُمَا»
“Look at her, for that is more likely to make love last between you.”
Jamiʿ al-Tirmidhi 1087 (graded sahih by al-Albani)
Al-Tirmidhi explained that the phrase means “more likely that affection will endure between you.” The Prophet ﷺ gave the same advice to another man who had married without seeing his bride (Sahih Muslim 1424a). Love, in his teaching, is something a good marriage is built on, and he wanted it to have a chance to grow.
What does the Quran say about getting to know a future spouse?
The Quran speaks openly about the feelings of people who hope to marry. Addressing men who wished to propose to widows during their waiting period, it says:
عَلِمَ ٱللَّهُ أَنَّكُمۡ سَتَذۡكُرُونَهُنَّ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُوَاعِدُوهُنَّ سِرًّا إِلَّآ أَن تَقُولُواْ قَوۡلٗا مَّعۡرُوفٗا
“Allah knows that you will think of them. Only do not make secret promises to them; speak to them with honorable words.”
Allah does not scold the suitor for thinking of the woman he hopes to marry. He asks for honor (maʿrūf) in what passes between them: no secret promises, no deception, words that both could repeat before their families.
Did the Prophet ﷺ and the Companions choose their own spouses?
They did, and women chose as freely as men. The early biographies of the Prophet ﷺ, from Ibn Ishaq onward, report that Khadija (may Allah be pleased with her), a respected merchant of Mecca, employed the young Muhammad ﷺ in her trade and heard of his honesty from her servant Maysara. She then sent her friend Nafīsa to ask whether he would consider marrying her. Their marriage, built on knowledge and trust, was the great love of his life.
When Fāṭima bint Qays received two proposals, she came to the Prophet ﷺ for advice. He gave his frank view of each suitor and suggested a third, Usāma ibn Zayd. She was reluctant at first, then accepted, and later said that Allah placed great good in that marriage (Sahih Muslim 1480a). The Quran tells a similar story of Moses (peace be upon him): a young woman of Madyan watched how he worked and told her father, “The best one to hire is the strong and trustworthy” (28:26), and her father then offered Moses marriage.
No marriage is valid without both people’s free consent (Sahih al-Bukhari 5136). Getting to know each other is how consent becomes real (Is forced marriage allowed in Islam?).
What are the boundaries of halal dating?
The tradition gives a few clear guides:
- Intend marriage. Be truthful with each other about what you are looking for. Leading someone on wounds a heart, and the Prophet ﷺ taught that a Muslim does not wrong a fellow Muslim.
- Meet in public or with family. The Prophet ﷺ advised against a man and woman being secluded together (Sahih al-Bukhari 5233). Its purpose is to protect both people, and cafés, parks, family dinners, and video calls serve it well.
- Keep sexual intimacy for the nikah. The Quran says, “Do not come near zina” (17:32), and gives intimacy its home in the covenant of marriage. Scholars differ about lesser forms of touch, such as a handshake; whatever a couple decide, affection must never be pressed on anyone.
- Involve family where you can. A wali or family member is a blessing of support for both people. Abu Hanifa held that an adult woman may contract her own marriage (Can a Muslim woman marry without a wali?), and many families today welcome meeting a suitor early.
- Pray the istikhāra prayer before deciding, and ask people who know the other person well.
Is it haram to have a crush or fall in love before marriage?
Feelings come before any decision, and the heart is not called to account for what it feels (Is having a crush haram?). The Prophet ﷺ saw marriage as the best home for that love: “We have seen nothing like marriage for two who love each other” (Sunan Ibn Majah 1847). The task is to carry love toward a covenant with honesty and patience.

A closing duʿāʾ
After Moses helped the two women of Madyan water their flocks, he sat in the shade and prayed. His prayer was answered with a home, a family, and a wife:
رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَآ أَنزَلۡتَ إِلَيَّ مِنۡ خَيۡرٖ فَقِيرٞ
“My Lord, I am in need of whatever good You send down to me.”
May Allah send every seeker a spouse who brings them rest, affection, and mercy, and bless the meeting that leads them to each other.
And Allah knows best. والله أعلم
Frequently asked questions
Is dating haram without touching?
Getting to know someone you hope to marry, through conversation and time spent together in public or with family, is halal. Many couples also keep physical affection for after the nikah, and that choice protects both people's hearts.
Is it haram to have a girlfriend or boyfriend?
A relationship that is truthful, respectful, and aimed at marriage is halal. The Quran keeps sexual relations for the covenant of marriage, so a couple who are serious about each other move toward a nikah.
Are dating apps haram?
No. An app is a modern way of being introduced, as families and matchmakers once introduced people. Use it truthfully, say clearly that you are looking for marriage, and take care with your safety when you meet.
Can a Muslim date a Christian?
Getting to know someone of another faith follows the same ethics of honesty and respect. Whether and how to marry across faiths is discussed in the answers on interfaith marriage linked on this page.
