About Islam Questions

Islam Questions answers the questions that Muslims and their neighbors ask about Islam: about prayer and fasting, marriage and family, dress, food, music and art, money, health, and life among people of other faiths. Each answer opens with the question as a reader would put it and a short summary of the ruling, then sets out the evidence in full.

An independent site

Islam Questions is independent. It is not affiliated with any mosque, school, government, or religious institution, and it issues no fatwas on behalf of any body. It is a place to read what the sources say and how the scholars have understood them.

Where the answers come from

The answers are drawn from the Quran, the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, and the classical and modern scholars. They follow the merciful and progressive strand of the tradition: the reading that gives first place to Allah’s mercy (raḥma), to justice (ʿadl), and to the objectives of the sharia (maqāṣid al-sharīʿa), and that draws on the long record of scholarly disagreement (ikhtilāf) to find the wider and kinder view. Where the scholars differed, the answers say so and give the evidence for each position.

This tradition is lived today. At the Ibn Rushd-Goethe Mosque in Berlin, women and men pray side by side and women lead the prayer. It and other inclusive communities around the world gather Muslims who pray, study, and serve in this spirit.

Translations and texts

Every translation of the Quran and the hadith on this site is the site’s own, made from the Arabic. The Arabic text of the Quran is the Uthmani text of the King Fahd Complex for the Printing of the Holy Quran in Medina, taken from the quran-json package. Hadith are cited by the collection and number used on sunnah.com, and each citation links to the hadith there, so that readers can check the Arabic and the chain of transmission for themselves.
