Is having a crush haram?
Question 1010
Question
Is it haram to have a crush on someone or to develop feelings for a person before marriage?
Summary of answer
Having a crush is halal. Love and attraction arise in the heart without being chosen, and the Prophet ﷺ taught that Allah pardons what passes through the heart (Bukhari 5269). He spoke tenderly of Mughīth's love for Barīra, and Ibn Hazm wrote in The Ring of the Dove that love is neither condemned by religion nor forbidden by the sharia, for hearts are in Allah's hand. What matters is how a person carries the feeling: with honesty, patience, and respect.
Answer
Praise be to Allah.

Almost everyone has had a crush: a face you look for in a crowd, a name that makes your heart jump. Many young Muslims worry that the feeling itself is a sin. Having a crush is halal. Love and attraction arise in the heart without being chosen, the Prophet ﷺ taught that Allah pardons what passes through the heart, and the scholars of Islam wrote about love with tenderness and admiration. What matters is how you carry the feeling.
Is it haram to have a crush in Islam?
A crush is a feeling, and the sharia judges actions and choices. The Prophet ﷺ said:
«إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَجَاوَزَ عَنْ أُمَّتِي مَا حَدَّثَتْ بِهِ أَنْفُسَهَا، مَا لَمْ تَعْمَلْ أَوْ تَتَكَلَّمْ»
“Allah has pardoned my community for what their souls whisper to them, so long as they do not act on it or speak it.”
This hadith speaks even of thoughts of wrongdoing. Admiration and affection for another person are no wrongdoing at all, so they fall under its mercy all the more. The Quran asks of every soul only what it can bear:
لَا يُكَلِّفُ ٱللَّهُ نَفۡسًا إِلَّا وُسۡعَهَا
“Allah does not burden any soul beyond what it can bear.”
No one can command their heart not to feel. Allah does not ask it of anyone.
What did the scholars say about love?
The great jurist Ibn Hazm (d. 1064) of Córdoba wrote a whole book on love, Ṭawq al-Ḥamāma (The Ring of the Dove), in 1022. It describes the signs of love, the pain of separation, and the beauty of faithfulness, written from the standpoint of a devout Muslim. Of love itself he wrote:
ليس بمنكر في الديانة ولا بمحظور في الشريعة، إذ القلوب بيد الله عز وجل
“It is not condemned in religion, nor forbidden by the sharia, for hearts are in the hand of Allah, Mighty and Majestic.”
Ibn Hazm, Ṭawq al-Ḥamāma
The Prophet ﷺ himself described why some people are drawn to each other: “Souls are like gathered troops; those that recognize each other draw close, and those that do not drift apart” (Sahih al-Bukhari 3336).
Did the Prophet ﷺ speak about love between people?
He did, with great gentleness. Barīra, a freed woman of Medina, chose to leave her husband Mughīth after her emancipation gave her that right. Mughīth still loved her, and followed her through the streets of Medina weeping, his tears running down his beard. The Prophet ﷺ turned to his uncle:
«يَا عَبَّاسُ أَلاَ تَعْجَبُ مِنْ حُبِّ مُغِيثٍ بَرِيرَةَ، وَمِنْ بُغْضِ بَرِيرَةَ مُغِيثًا»
“ʿAbbās, are you not amazed at how much Mughīth loves Barīra, and how little Barīra cares for Mughīth?”
He asked Barīra whether she might return to him. She asked whether that was a command, and he said, “I am only interceding.” She declined, and he respected her choice. In one story the Prophet ﷺ honors the reality of love, shows compassion for a heart that is not loved back, and protects the other person’s freedom to say no.
What about Zulaykha and Yusuf?
The Quran tells of a woman whose love for Joseph (peace be upon him) had “pierced her heart” (12:30). Her fault in the Quran lies in what she did: she tried to coerce him. Later Muslim poets made her longing into one of the great love stories of Islamic literature. In Jāmī’s Persian poem Yūsuf u Zulaykhā (1483), Zulaykhā grows old still loving Yusuf, and at the end Allah restores her youth in answer to his prayer and the two marry. Sufi readers saw in her love a picture of the soul’s longing for Allah.
What should I do with a crush?
- Let the feeling be. You do not need to fight it or feel guilty for it.
- Keep it honorable. Treat the person with the same respect you would want for yourself, in person and online.
- If you are ready to marry, let the feeling move toward getting to know them with marriage in mind (Is dating haram in Islam?). The Prophet ﷺ said, “We have seen nothing like marriage for two who love each other” (Sunan Ibn Majah 1847).
- If they do not feel the same, accept it with grace, as the Prophet ﷺ accepted Barīra’s answer. No one is owed another person’s love, and no one may be pressured into marriage (Is forced marriage allowed in Islam?).
- Keep your balance. If a crush crowds out your prayers, studies, or sleep, talk to a friend, a parent, or a counselor you trust.
- Bring it to Allah. Ask Him for what is good for you, with this person or with someone else.
The same counsel applies to a crush on someone of the same sex (Is being gay haram?). Desire is part of the human being, and its other questions are treated in Is masturbation haram? For those who are not looking to marry, a crush can pass like weather, and a single life can be full of love and worship (Is it haram not to get married or have children?).
A closing word
A crush can leave the heart restless. The Quran tells us where every heart finds its home:
أَلَا بِذِكۡرِ ٱللَّهِ تَطۡمَئِنُّ ٱلۡقُلُوبُ
“In the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest.”
May Allah fill your heart with love that leads you to Him, and grant you the companion who brings you peace.
And Allah knows best.
Frequently asked questions
Is it haram to tell your crush you like them?
Telling someone of your feelings with respect, and with marriage in mind, is halal; the Quran allows honorable words between people who hope to marry (2:235). If they do not return the feeling, accept their answer graciously, as the Prophet ﷺ accepted Barīra's.
Is it haram to have a crush on someone of the same gender?
No. Attraction to someone of the same sex is part of how some people are made, and same-sex love is halal on the stronger view. The guidance on carrying feelings with honesty and patience is the same for everyone.
Is it haram to have a crush during Ramadan?
No. Feelings do not break the fast or reduce its reward. Ramadan is a good time to bring your hopes to Allah in duʿāʾ.
What if I have a crush on someone who is married?
The feeling itself carries no blame, but it should not be acted on. Protect their marriage and your own heart by keeping distance, and let the feeling fade with time.
