Can a Sunni and a Shia marry?
Question 1139
Question
Is it permissible for a Sunni Muslim to marry a Shia Muslim, and what should the couple agree on before the nikah?
Summary of answer
A Sunni and a Shia may marry, and the marriage is valid in every school. Both are Muslims: Shaykh Mahmud Shaltut of al-Azhar recognized the Jaʿfari school, and the Amman Message forbade declaring the followers of any recognized school unbelievers. The Prophet ﷺ told families to accept a suitor whose faith and character they trust. Couples do well to write a contract that satisfies both schools and to agree early on how they will raise their children.
Answer
الحمد لله Praise be to Allah.

A Sunni and a Shia who love each other, and whose families wonder whether they may marry, can be at peace. A Sunni and a Shia can marry, and the marriage is valid in every school of Islamic law. Both are Muslims who pray to the same Lord, toward the same Kaʿba, with the same Quran, and the great scholars of both traditions have recognized one another. The questions a couple faces are practical ones: how to write a contract both schools accept, and how to build a home where each spouse’s practice is honored.
Is it haram for a Sunni to marry a Shia?
It is halal. The basic condition for a Muslim’s marriage is that both spouses are Muslims, or that the other spouse is of the People of the Book, and Sunni and Shia Muslims are both Muslims. Shaykh Mahmud Shaltut, Grand Imam of al-Azhar from 1958 to 1963, issued a fatwa that the Jaʿfari school of the Shia may be followed like the four Sunni schools. In 2004 King Abdullah II of Jordan issued the Amman Message, and in July 2005 an international gathering of scholars confirmed it: the followers of the eight recognized schools, Hanafi, Maliki, Shafiʿi, Hanbali, Jaʿfari, Zaydi, Ibadi, and Zahiri, are Muslims, and no one may declare them unbelievers.
The Prophet ﷺ gave families a simple measure for a marriage proposal:
«إِذَا خَطَبَ إِلَيْكُمْ مَنْ تَرْضَوْنَ دِينَهُ وَخُلُقَهُ فَزَوِّجُوهُ»
“When someone whose faith and character please you asks to marry into your family, let them marry.”
Al-Albani graded this hadith hasan. A Shia suitor who prays, keeps his word, and treats people well meets that measure, and so does a Sunni one.
Some scholars on both sides have discouraged these marriages, fearing that a spouse or the children would be drawn away from their school, and a few have forbidden them outright. Their concern for faith is sincere. The answer to it lies in mutual respect within the marriage, since the Quran asks the believers to be one family:
إِنَّمَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ إِخۡوَةٞ
“The believers are one family of brothers and sisters.”
Have Sunni and Shia families married each other in history?
They have, from the beginning. Imam Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq (d. 765), after whom Shia law is named, was a great-great-grandson of ʿAlī and Fāṭima, and so a descendant of the Prophet ﷺ, and through his mother Umm Farwa he was also a great-great-grandson of Abu Bakr. Abu Hanifa and Malik, founders of two Sunni schools, both learned from him. In modern times Sunni and Shia families have intermarried widely in Iraq, Lebanon, and Pakistan, and mixed couples are common among Muslims in Europe and North America. A child of such a home often carries the whole Muslim family in one heart.
How do Sunni and Shia marriage rules differ?
The differences are few, and a careful couple can satisfy both schools at once:
- Witnesses. The Sunni schools require two witnesses at the nikah; Jaʿfari law recommends them. Having two witnesses makes the marriage valid for both.
- The guardian. The schools differ on whether a bride needs her guardian’s (walī) consent. The Hanafi school lets an adult woman contract her own marriage (Can a Muslim woman marry without a wali?). Where families are involved and supportive, their blessing makes everything easier.
- Permanent marriage. Jaʿfari law permits temporary marriage (mutʿa) and the Sunni schools do not, so a mixed couple should make a permanent marriage, which all accept.
- Divorce. Jaʿfari law requires two upright witnesses for a divorce and does not count three pronouncements at once as three (Is triple talaq valid?). Knowing this in advance protects both spouses.
The essentials are shared by all: free consent, a mahr given to the bride, and a public celebration (What happens at a Muslim wedding?).
How can a Sunni-Shia couple build a home together?
Talk before the wedding about the things that will shape daily life. A Shia spouse may join the noon and afternoon prayers and the sunset and night prayers, pray with arms at the sides, and prostrate on a clay tablet; a Sunni spouse may pray five separate times with folded arms. Both forms rest on the practice of the Prophet ﷺ as each tradition preserved it (Can you combine prayers?). Each spouse can pray in their own way, and the two can pray together.
Agree on the calendar: the Eids, the nights of Ramadan, and the days of mourning in Muḥarram when Shia families remember al-Ḥusayn, whom Sunni Muslims love too. Agree on how you will speak of the Companions and the Prophet’s family at home, with love for all and contempt for none. And agree on your children’s upbringing, so that they learn the faith from both parents (What is the difference between Sunni and Shia Islam?).
What if our families object?
Parents’ fears usually come from love and from stories they have heard. Give them time, introduce them to each other’s families, and invite a respected imam from each side to meet the couple. Children owe their parents kindness and a fair hearing, while the choice of a spouse belongs to the two who will marry (Do I have to obey my parents?).
A closing word
Allah describes marriage as one of His signs:
وَمِنۡ ءَايَٰتِهِۦٓ أَنۡ خَلَقَ لَكُم مِّنۡ أَنفُسِكُمۡ أَزۡوَٰجٗا لِّتَسۡكُنُوٓاْ إِلَيۡهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيۡنَكُم مَّوَدَّةٗ وَرَحۡمَةً
“Among His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves, so that you may find rest in them, and He placed between you love and mercy.”
May Allah place that love and mercy in every Sunni and Shia home, and let such families be a sign of the unity He wants for the believers.
And Allah knows best. والله أعلم
Frequently asked questions
Is a Sunni-Shia marriage valid in Shia law?
Yes. Jaʿfari jurists recognize a marriage between a Shia and a Sunni Muslim as valid. Some Shia scholars advise caution where a spouse may be pressed to give up their school, which is a matter of good conduct within the marriage.
Do we need witnesses for a Sunni-Shia nikah?
Sunni law requires two witnesses for a marriage, while Jaʿfari law recommends them without requiring them. Having two witnesses makes the marriage valid in both schools, and it also makes it public, which is a sunna.
Which school will our children follow?
That is for the parents to decide together before they marry. Many mixed families teach their children love for the Prophet's family and his Companions, and let them learn the practice of both parents.
Can a Sunni-Shia couple have a temporary marriage (mutʿa)?
Sunni schools do not recognize temporary marriage, so a couple joining the two traditions should make a permanent marriage, which every school accepts.
