Is it a sin to miss Jummah (Friday prayer)?
Question 1198
Question
Is it a sin to miss the Friday prayer, what counts as a valid excuse, and what should a Muslim do after missing it?
Summary of answer
The Friday prayer (Jumuʿa) is a duty on adult men who are healthy and at home, and skipping it out of indifference is a sin to turn back from. The Prophet ﷺ excused the sick, travelers, and women, and his Companions told people to pray at home on a day of rain and mud. Whoever misses Jumuʿa prays the four units of Dhuhr, and the door to the next Friday is always open.
Answer
الحمد لله Praise be to Allah.

Friday is the weekly gathering of the Muslim community. The Prophet ﷺ called it the best day on which the sun has risen (Sahih Muslim 854a), and its midday prayer, the Friday prayer (ṣalāt al-jumuʿa, صلاة الجمعة), is the one prayer of the week that a Muslim man at home is asked to pray in congregation with a sermon. Missing Jummah out of indifference is a sin to turn back from. Missing it for a real reason, such as illness, travel, bad weather, or work you cannot leave, carries no blame, and in every case the remedy is the same: pray Dhuhr, and come back next Friday.
What does the Quran say about Jummah?
A whole sūra of the Quran takes its name from Friday, and its closing verses set out the prayer:
“Believers, when the call to prayer is made on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave your trading. That is better for you, if only you knew. Then, when the prayer is over, spread out through the land, seek Allah’s bounty, and remember Allah often, so that you may prosper.”
The verses ask for an hour in a working day: trade pauses at the call and resumes when the prayer ends. The reward is great: whoever bathes, comes to the Friday prayer, listens in silence to the sermon, and prays with the imam is forgiven what lies between that Friday and the next, and three days more (Sahih Muslim 857a).
Is it a sin to miss Jummah?
Jumuʿa is a duty on adult men who are healthy and resident. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The Friday prayer in congregation is a binding duty on every Muslim, except four: an enslaved person, a woman, a child, and a sick person” (Sunan Abi Dawud 1067, graded sahih by al-Albani). Travelers are excused by the agreement of the schools.
For those on whom it falls, the Prophet ﷺ spoke strongly about letting it go. From the steps of his pulpit he said:
«لَيَنْتَهِيَنَّ أَقْوَامٌ عَنْ وَدْعِهِمُ الْجُمُعَاتِ أَوْ لَيَخْتِمَنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَى قُلُوبِهِمْ ثُمَّ لَيَكُونُنَّ مِنَ الْغَافِلِينَ»
“People must stop abandoning the Friday prayers, or else Allah will seal their hearts, and then they will be among the heedless.”
Another report names the measure: “Whoever leaves three Fridays out of disregard for them, Allah sets a seal on his heart” (Sunan Abi Dawud 1052, graded hasan sahih by al-Albani). The word used, tahāwunan (تهاونًا), means treating something as unimportant. It describes a heart that drifts week after week until it no longer hears the call, and it was given to call people back in time. A Friday missed through a real excuse is outside it, and so is a Friday missed once and regretted.
What are valid excuses for missing Jummah?
Illness and caring for others
The sick are named in the hadith above. Jurists extend it to someone nursing a sick relative and to anyone for whom crowds or long sitting are a real hardship. A report graded sahih by al-Albani names “fear or illness” as the excuses for missing congregation (Sunan Abi Dawud 551).
Travel
A traveler has no Jumuʿa duty and prays Dhuhr, shortened to two units if he wishes; see How do you pray while traveling?
Rain, snow, and danger
On a rainy Friday, Ibn ʿAbbas (may Allah be pleased with him) told his muezzin to call “Pray in your homes” in place of “Come to prayer”. When people objected, he said that one better than him had done it, and explained:
«إِنَّ الْجُمُعَةَ عَزْمَةٌ، وَإِنِّي كَرِهْتُ أَنْ أُخْرِجَكُمْ، فَتَمْشُونَ فِي الطِّينِ وَالدَّحْضِ»
“The Friday prayer is a firm duty, and still I did not want to make you go out and walk through the mud and the slippery ground.”
Storms, icy roads, and danger on the way fall under the same mercy, as did the closing of mosques during an epidemic.
Work you cannot leave
Ask for the time first: many employers grant a long Friday lunch, and many mosques in Europe and North America hold two or three Jumuʿa sessions to fit different shifts. Where none of this is possible, and refusing would cost you a livelihood your family depends on, the principle that “Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity” (Quran 2:286) applies. Pray Dhuhr at work and keep looking for a way back.
Women
Women are excused from the duty, and the mosque is theirs on Friday as much as any day (Can women go to the mosque?). A woman who attends prays Jumuʿa and needs no Dhuhr afterward.
What should I do if I missed Jummah?
- Pray Dhuhr. Pray its four units within its time. Jumuʿa is a congregational prayer with a sermon, so a person who missed it prays Dhuhr in its place.
- If there was no excuse, turn back to Allah. Ask His forgiveness and resolve to go next week. A report telling the one who skipped Jumuʿa to give a dinar in charity has a weak chain (Sunan Abi Dawud 1053), though a gift to the poor after a lapse is good in itself.
- Plan the next Friday. Find the session that fits your schedule and set a reminder. The Friday bath is a sunna, and wudu alone is enough (Jamiʿ al-Tirmidhi 497; see How do you perform ghusl?).
If prayer in general has become hard for you, start small and gently; What if I miss prayers or struggle to pray? is written for you.
Coming back to Jummah without shame
Some people stay away because they have stayed away a while. No one at the door is keeping count. The Prophet ﷺ promised forgiveness to the one who comes and listens, and Allah’s own invitation is open to every heart that turns back:
۞قُلۡ يَٰعِبَادِيَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسۡرَفُواْ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمۡ لَا تَقۡنَطُواْ مِن رَّحۡمَةِ ٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَغۡفِرُ ٱلذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا
“Say: My servants who have wronged yourselves, do not despair of Allah’s mercy. Allah forgives all sins.”
Come this Friday, sit near the back if you like, and let the sermon and the rows of shoulders welcome you home.
And Allah knows best. والله أعلم
Frequently asked questions
Is Jummah obligatory for women?
The Prophet ﷺ named women among those for whom Jumuʿa is not a duty, and they are welcome to attend. A woman who prays Jumuʿa with the congregation has fulfilled her Dhuhr, and one who stays home prays Dhuhr.
Can I miss Jummah because of work?
Ask for the time first, and look for a later session or a mosque near your workplace. If your employer will not release you and losing the job would harm you or your family, you are excused: pray Dhuhr at work.
What do I pray if I missed Jummah?
Pray the four units of Dhuhr within its time. Jumuʿa is a congregational prayer with a sermon, so it is replaced by Dhuhr and not made up on its own.
Do I have to pray Jummah when Eid falls on a Friday?
The Prophet ﷺ said on such a day that the Eid prayer is enough for whoever wishes, while he himself would lead Jumuʿa (Sunan Abi Dawud 1073, graded sahih by al-Albani). Many scholars therefore let those who prayed Eid pray Dhuhr in place of Jumuʿa, while others keep Jumuʿa a duty for the residents of the town.
What is the Shia view on Friday prayer?
In Jaʿfari fiqh, while the Twelfth Imam is in occultation, a believer may pray Jumuʿa where its conditions are met or pray Dhuhr in its place. Jumuʿa is preferred where it is held, and praying it removes the need for Dhuhr.
