Is it haram to read fiction, fantasy, or romance novels?

Question 1166

Question

Is it permissible for Muslims to read novels and other fiction, including fantasy, magic, and romance?

Summary of answer

Reading novels, fantasy, and romance is halal. The Quran teaches through parables so that people may reflect, and the Prophet ﷺ listened to Aisha's long tale of eleven women and their husbands and told her he was to her as the best husband in it. Fiction deceives no one, since writer and reader both know it is invented. Muslim civilization gave the world Kalīla wa-Dimna, the Thousand and One Nights, Ḥayy ibn Yaqẓān, and Layla and Majnun.

Answer

الحمد لله Praise be to Allah.

A sandstone wall carved with blocky square Kufic letters, a maze-like grid of right angles framed by a pointed arch.

A fantasy series read under the covers, a mystery on a long flight, a love story that made you cry: reading fiction is one of life’s great pleasures, and many Muslims ask whether it is allowed. Reading fiction is halal, and that includes fantasy, magic, and romance. The Quran teaches through parables, the Prophet ﷺ listened to and allowed stories, and Muslim writers gave the world some of its most loved tales.

Does the Quran use stories and parables?

The Quran is full of stories, and it also teaches through mathal (مثل), the parable or likeness that invites the reader to imagine. A good word is like a good tree, its roots firm and its branches in the sky (14:24). The deeds of those who reject faith are like ashes blown by a stormy wind (14:18). After describing a mountain split apart by the weight of revelation, the Quran explains its method:

وَتِلۡكَ ٱلۡأَمۡثَٰلُ نَضۡرِبُهَا لِلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

“These parables We set forth for people, so that they may reflect.”

Quran 59:21

Imagination, in the Quran, is a road to reflection (tafakkur). A novel that makes you see the world through another person’s eyes uses the same gift.

Is fiction lying?

Some ask whether an invented story is a lie. A lie (kadhib, كذب) tells someone something false so that they will believe it. Fiction is an agreement between writer and reader that the story is invented, and no one is deceived. The Prophet ﷺ himself gave his community permission to tell the stories of earlier peoples, whose truth no one could check:

«وَحَدِّثُوا عَنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ وَلاَ حَرَجَ»

“And tell stories of the Children of Israel; there is no harm in it.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 3461

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated one of the most memorable tales in Sahih al-Bukhari: eleven women sat together and agreed to tell the truth about their husbands, each in a few vivid lines, until the last, Umm Zarʿ, described the generous Abu Zarʿ. The Prophet ﷺ listened, and then he said to Aisha: “I am to you as Abu Zarʿ was to Umm Zarʿ” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5189). The rules of truthfulness are set out in Is lying haram? What about white lies?

What fiction did Muslims write?

Muslim civilization is one of the great storytelling civilizations of the world:

  • Kalīla wa-Dimna, animal fables on wisdom and power, rendered into Arabic by Ibn al-Muqaffaʿ (d. c. 759) and read across the Muslim world and beyond.
  • The Thousand and One Nights (Alf Layla wa-Layla), in which Shahrazad saves her life and changes a king’s heart one story at a time.
  • Ḥayy ibn Yaqẓān by Ibn Ṭufayl (d. 1185) of al-Andalus, a philosophical novel about a child raised by a gazelle on an island who comes to know his Creator.
  • The Maqāmāt of al-Ḥarīrī (d. 1122) of Basra, comic tales of a silver-tongued rogue, studied for centuries as masterpieces of Arabic prose.
  • The Conference of the Birds by the Persian poet ʿAṭṭār, an allegory in which birds cross seven valleys in search of their king.

In the twentieth century the Egyptian novelist Naguib Mahfouz received the Nobel Prize in Literature (1988).

Is it haram to read fantasy and books about magic?

The Quran forbids practicing sorcery (2:102), and reading a story in which characters cast spells is a different act. The Quran’s own world is wide and wondrous: jinn who listen to the Quran, Solomon (peace be upon him) commanding the wind, a hoopoe bringing news of a distant queen, and a throne carried across a kingdom in the blink of an eye (27:40). Fantasy that stirs wonder at a world larger than ours can deepen faith in the unseen (What are jinn?). Stories told on screen follow the same ruling (Is it haram to watch movies, TV, or anime?).

Is it haram to read romance novels?

Love stories are among the jewels of Muslim literature. Niẓāmī Ganjavī wrote Layla and Majnun in 1188, the tale of a poet driven to the desert by love, and Jāmī (d. 1492) turned the Quran’s story of Joseph and the wife of al-ʿAzīz into Yusuf and Zulaykha, a poem of longing that becomes love of Allah. Longing and desire are part of the human heart (Is having a crush haram?), and a well-told love story can teach tenderness, patience, and fidelity.

What each person reads is a matter for their own conscience. Adults choose for themselves, parents guide their children, and a reader who finds that a book unsettles their heart may set it down.

Some cite the verse about “one who buys idle tales to lead people astray from the path of Allah, and to mock it” (31:6). Some early commentators connected it to a man of Quraysh who brought Persian tales to Mecca to draw listeners away from the Prophet ﷺ. Its condemnation falls on that purpose. A novel read for joy and reflection lies outside it.

A closing word

The first word Allah revealed to His Prophet ﷺ was a command:

ٱقۡرَأۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَ

“Read, in the name of your Lord who created.”

Quran 96:1

Read widely, in His name. Let stories enlarge your heart, sharpen your mind, and return you to the Book that tells the best of stories with fresh eyes.

And Allah knows best. والله أعلم

Frequently asked questions

Is fiction a form of lying?

No. A lie deceives someone into believing what is false, and a novel deceives no one, because writer and reader both know the story is invented. The Quran's parables and the Prophet's ﷺ permission to tell the stories of earlier peoples show that storytelling has its own honorable place.

Is it haram to read books about magic, like Harry Potter?

No. Practicing sorcery is forbidden, and reading a story in which characters cast spells is a different act. The Quran itself tells of jinn, Solomon's command of the wind, and a throne carried across a kingdom in the blink of an eye.

Is it haram to read romance novels?

Romance has a long and honored place in Muslim literature, from Layla and Majnun to Jāmī's Yusuf and Zulaykha. Explicit content is a matter for each adult reader's conscience, and parents guide what their children read.

Does the verse about idle tales (31:6) forbid novels?

The verse condemns those who buy idle talk in order to lead people away from the path of Allah and mock it. Reading a story for joy, rest, or reflection lies outside that purpose.
