Is it haram to eat pork in Minecraft?
Question 1025
Question
Is it haram for a Muslim to eat porkchops or pigs in Minecraft or other video games?
Summary of answer
Eating pork in Minecraft is permissible. The Quran forbids eating the flesh of swine, and a game character eating a pixel porkchop involves no meat, no eating and no intention of disobeying Allah. Islamic law judges actions by their reality and their intentions. The Prophet ﷺ played and joked with children, and Allah has placed no needless hardship in the religion.
Answer
الحمد لله Praise be to Allah.

In Minecraft, pigs wander the fields, and a hungry player can cook a porkchop and eat it to fill the hunger bar. Muslim children, and plenty of adults, have paused at this moment and wondered whether they were doing something wrong. The answer is gentle and clear: eating pork in Minecraft is permissible. The Quran forbids eating the flesh of swine, and in a video game no flesh exists and nothing is eaten. It is a lovely sign of a careful conscience that the question was asked at all.
What exactly does the Quran forbid about pork?
The Quran names what is forbidden with precision:
إِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ عَلَيۡكُمُ ٱلۡمَيۡتَةَ وَٱلدَّمَ وَلَحۡمَ ٱلۡخِنزِيرِ
“He has forbidden you only carrion, blood, and the flesh of swine.”
The prohibition concerns eating real flesh (laḥm). A pig in Minecraft is a pink block of pixels, and the porkchop is a picture on a screen. When your character “eats” it, you eat nothing at all: your mouth, your stomach and your body are untouched. A ruling about food cannot apply where there is no food. Our answer on why pork is haram explains the wisdom of the real prohibition, and none of it reaches a game.
Why does intention matter in Islamic law?
The first hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari sets a foundation for the whole sharia: “Actions are only by intentions, and each person will have what they intended” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1). The jurists built on it one of the five great legal maxims: matters are judged by their purposes (al-umūr bi-maqāṣidihā, الأمور بمقاصدها). Al-Suyuti (d. 1505) opens his book of legal maxims with it.
A player who taps a button to refill a hunger bar intends to keep a character alive in a story. They do not intend to eat pork, they do not believe pork is lawful, and they are not mocking Allah’s command. Every element that would make an act sinful is missing.
Is imagination allowed in Islam?
It is, and the Prophet ﷺ enjoyed it. When he saw among Aisha’s dolls a horse with two wings made of cloth, she reminded him that Solomon had winged horses, and he laughed until his back teeth showed (Sunan Abi Dawud 4932). That story, and what it means for art, is told in Is it haram to draw faces or people?
Imagination lets people tell stories, rehearse courage, and enter other worlds without leaving their seats. Pretending to farm, build, fight a dragon or eat a cake is play, and play is part of a healthy life.
How did the Prophet ﷺ treat children’s play?
With warmth and humor. Anas ibn Malik had a little brother named Abu Umayr who kept a small bird, a nughayr, and played with it. Whenever the Prophet ﷺ visited, he greeted the boy with a playful rhyme:
«يَا أَبَا عُمَيْرٍ مَا فَعَلَ النُّغَيْرُ»
“Abu Umayr, what happened to the little nughayr?”
In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ found the boy sad because the bird had died, and he comforted him with the same rhyme (Sunan Abi Dawud 4969). The Prophet ﷺ entered a child’s world on the child’s terms, taking a little boy’s pet and his grief seriously. His Companions once remarked that he joked with them, and he answered, “I only ever say what is true” (Jamiʿ al-Tirmidhi 1990, graded sahih by al-Albani). Lighthearted play, kept truthful and kind, is part of his Sunnah.
Does Allah want us to worry about things like this?
The religion is meant to be light where Allah made it light:
وَمَا جَعَلَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ فِي ٱلدِّينِ مِنۡ حَرَجٖ
“He has placed no hardship on you in religion.”
Some Muslims, especially young people, become anxious that every small thing might be a sin. Scholars call this excessive scrupulosity (waswasa) and have always advised against feeding it. If you notice that you worry about many questions like this one, be gentle with yourself, and talk with a kind teacher or counselor. Allah’s mercy is wider than any worry.
What should Muslim gamers think about instead?
The questions that matter in gaming are the ones that matter everywhere else. Are you keeping your prayers? Are you kind to the people you play with online? Do you make time for family, school, sleep and the outdoors? Is the game’s content something you are glad to fill your mind with? Our answer on whether video games are haram works through these with care. A porkchop in Minecraft is far down that list, and in truth it is not on the list.
If your child brings you this question, thank them for it. A child who wonders whether Allah would mind is a child whose heart is awake. Explain the difference between a real act and a game, and let them see that their religion is a source of ease and joy.
The same reasoning covers pretend food at a child’s tea party, a pork dish in a cooking game, and a pig character in a cartoon. The tradition also leaves room for fun with sound and song, as explained in Is music haram? And if you play during Ramadan, your character can eat as much as it likes without touching your fast (What breaks your fast?).
A closing word
Allah gave you a mind that can build whole worlds out of blocks. Thank Him for it, play with a clear heart, and when the adhan sounds, put the controller down and stand before the One who made you and every world you will ever imagine.
And Allah knows best. والله أعلم
Frequently asked questions
Is it haram to kill or farm pigs in Minecraft?
No. Game animals are drawings that move. Real animals deserve real kindness, and the Prophet ﷺ taught mercy to every living creature, but pixels on a screen feel no pain.
Does eating food in Minecraft break my fast in Ramadan?
No. Fasting is broken by real eating and drinking. Your character can eat a whole cake while you keep your fast.
Is it haram to drink potions or alcohol in a video game?
Drinking in a game involves no real drink and no intoxication, so it takes the same ruling as game food. Parents can still use their judgment about which games suit their children.
Should I avoid pork in games anyway, out of caution?
You are free to, if it makes you more comfortable. You are also free to eat the porkchop. Neither choice makes you a better or worse Muslim, and neither should be pressed on someone else.
