Why is pork haram?

Question 1085

Question

Why do Muslims not eat pork, and why does the Quran forbid it?

Summary of answer

Pork is haram because Allah forbade it in four verses of the Quran, among them 2:173, as He had forbidden it in the Torah. Muslims keep the ruling first as an act of obedience and love, and the scholars have found wisdom in it as well. The same verse permits pork in real necessity, medicines with porcine ingredients are allowed when needed, and eating it by mistake carries no sin. Muslims hold no contempt for neighbors who eat it.

Answer

الحمد لله Praise be to Allah.

A carved wooden pavilion with a green-tiled roof and stucco arches stands at the end of a long, still water channel in a white arcaded courtyard.

Not eating pork is one of the best-known marks of Muslim life, and neighbors, coworkers, and Muslim children often ask the reason. The shortest answer is also the deepest: pork is haram because Allah forbade it. Muslims keep this ruling as an act of obedience and love toward their Lord, the same way the Jewish people have kept it since the Torah. The scholars have also reflected on its wisdom. And the Quran, in the very verse that forbids pork, makes room for necessity and closes with Allah’s mercy.

Where does the Quran say pork is haram?

The Quran forbids the flesh of swine in four places: 2:173, 5:3, 6:145, and 16:115. The first reads:

“He has forbidden you only carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, and what is dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is compelled, without desiring it and without exceeding the need, commits no sin. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.”

Quran 2:173

The verse begins with “only” (innamā). The list of foods the Quran forbids is short, and everything else good on the earth is open to us. In Sūrat al-Anʿām the Prophet ﷺ is told to say, “I do not find in what has been revealed to me anything forbidden to eat,” except these few things, and pork is described there as rijs, something defiling (Quran 6:145).

Why did Allah forbid pork?

The first reason a Muslim gives is obedience. The scholars call a ruling whose full reasons Allah has not explained taʿabbudī, a matter of worship, and the prohibition of pork is often given as an example. The first command Allah gave to human beings was also about food: Adam and Eve could eat freely in the Garden, but were not to approach one tree (2:35). To leave a single food for Allah’s sake, every day, for a lifetime, is a small and constant act of love.

The prohibition also joins Muslims to the prophets before them. The Torah forbids the pig (Leviticus 11:7; Deuteronomy 14:8), and the Quran presents Jesus (peace be upon him) as “confirming the Torah that came before me” (3:50). Muslims and observant Jews share this table rule to this day, a sign of their common root in Abraham’s faith.

The scholars have also suggested wisdoms. The Quran’s own word, rijs, points to something unwholesome. Some modern writers mention the parasites, such as trichinella, that undercooked pork can carry. Others see a lesson in discipline: a person who can refuse one food at every meal learns to master other desires. These reflections are helpful, and the ruling does not depend on them, which is why it stays the same when pork is farmed and cooked safely.

When is pork allowed in Islam?

The verse itself answers. “Whoever is compelled, without desiring it and without exceeding the need, commits no sin.” A starving person with nothing else to eat may eat pork to survive, and the jurists say they must. The same mercy covers medicine. Many medicines and devices have porcine origins, such as heparin, some heart valves, and the gelatin in certain capsules and vaccines. When they are needed, they are permitted. Many scholars add that gelatin is so changed from its source that it becomes a new substance (istiḥāla), as explained in Is gelatin halal? In December 2020 the UAE Fatwa Council ruled that Covid-19 vaccines are permissible even if they contain pork gelatin (Are vaccines halal?).

Eating pork by mistake carries no sin at all:

«إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَضَعَ عَنْ أُمَّتِي الْخَطَأَ وَالنِّسْيَانَ وَمَا اسْتُكْرِهُوا عَلَيْهِ»

“Allah has lifted from my community what they do by mistake, what they forget, and what they are forced into.”

Sunan Ibn Majah 2045, graded sahih by al-Albani

The Quran says the same: “There is no blame on you for what you do by mistake, only for what your hearts intend” (33:5). And eating pork in a video game is no eating at all, as Is it haram to eat pork in Minecraft? cheerfully explains.

Is the pig itself impure, and do Muslims hate pigs?

The pig is one of Allah’s creatures, and cruelty to any animal is forbidden. The Maliki school holds that every living creature is pure, “even a dog or a pig,” while the other schools treat the pig as impure and ask only that one wash after touching it. Contact with pork at work, in a shop, or in a family kitchen is discussed in Can Muslims touch pork, or cook and sell it for others?

Muslims hold no contempt for people who eat pork. The Quran makes the food of the People of the Book lawful for Muslims (5:5), and pork is the exception within a wide permission, so Muslims and Christians have shared meals for fourteen centuries. The Prophet ﷺ himself died with his armor held by a Jewish man of Medina as security for barley to feed his family (Sahih al-Bukhari 2916). A Muslim can sit with friends who order a pork dish, and their friendship need not change. Kosher and other meat is discussed in Can Muslims eat kosher or non-halal-certified meat?

Closing

The Quran’s invitation is wide and joyful:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ كُلُواْ مِمَّا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ حَلَٰلٗا طَيِّبٗا

“People, eat of what is on the earth, lawful and good.”

Quran 2:168

The single food a Muslim leaves is a reminder of everything Allah has given. May He bless what He has provided for us, and make every meal an occasion of gratitude.

And Allah knows best. والله أعلم

Frequently asked questions

What happens if a Muslim eats pork by mistake?

There is no sin in it. The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah has lifted from his community what they do by mistake, what they forget, and what they are forced into (Sunan Ibn Majah 2045). Stop when you find out, and carry on with a clear heart.

Is it haram to touch a pig or pork?

Touching pork does not harm your faith; wash your hands before prayer. The Maliki school holds every living animal to be pure, the pig included, and the other schools ask only for washing after contact.

Is pork haram in Christianity and Judaism?

The Torah forbids pork (Leviticus 11:7; Deuteronomy 14:8), and observant Jews keep that law today. Most Christians eat pork, following the early church's teaching that the dietary laws of the Torah no longer bind them.

Are medicines and vaccines with pork gelatin allowed?

Yes, when they are needed. The necessity clause of 2:173 covers medicine, many scholars hold that gelatin is a transformed substance (istiḥāla), and the UAE Fatwa Council permitted Covid-19 vaccines containing pork gelatin in 2020.
