Is gelatin halal?
Question 1086
Question
Is gelatin halal, including gelatin made from pork, in sweets, yogurt, medicines, and capsules?
Summary of answer
Gelatin is halal on the stronger view, whatever its source, because processing turns skin and bone into a new substance. The Hanafi, Maliki, and Zahiri schools and Ibn Taymiyya held that a substance transformed in its nature (istiḥāla) takes a new ruling, and the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences applied this to gelatin in 1995. Gelatin from fish or halal-slaughtered cattle is halal by agreement, and those who follow the stricter view can choose it.
Answer
الحمد لله Praise be to Allah.

Gelatin is in gummy sweets, marshmallows, yogurt, jelly, cakes, and the soft shells of many capsules, and much of it comes from pigs. Muslims reading ingredient labels ask whether all of it is off limits. On the stronger view, gelatin is halal whatever its source, because the long industrial process turns animal skin and bone into a new substance. The scholars call this transformation istiḥāla (استحالة). Gelatin made from fish or from halal-slaughtered cattle is halal by the agreement of all, so those who prefer the stricter view have easy choices too.
What is gelatin made from?
Gelatin is a protein extracted from collagen, the connective tissue in animal skin and bones. Manufacturers use pig skin, cattle hides and bones, or fish skin. The raw material is soaked for days or weeks in acid or alkali, boiled in stages, filtered, purified, and dried into a powder or sheets. What comes out has the look, smell, taste, and chemistry of none of the things that went in: a clear, flavorless protein that sets liquids into a gel.
What is istiḥāla, and why does it matter?
The sharia attaches its rulings to the real nature of a thing. When that nature changes completely, the ruling changes with it. The Sunnah gives two clear examples. Wine that turns into vinegar becomes lawful, and the Prophet ﷺ praised vinegar as “an excellent relish” (Sahih Muslim 2051a). And the hide of an animal that died without slaughter, which is impure, becomes pure by tanning:
«إِذَا دُبِغَ الإِهَابُ فَقَدْ طَهُرَ»
“When a hide is tanned, it has become pure.”
The Hanafi and Maliki schools extended this principle to every complete transformation. The Hanafi jurists gave examples: dung burned to ash is pure, and an animal that falls into a salt pan and becomes salt is salt. Imam Ibn Hazm (d. 1064) of the Zahiri school and Ibn Taymiyya (d. 1328), may Allah have mercy on them, held the same, and a report from Ahmad ibn Hanbal agrees. The Shafi’i school and the main Hanbali position limited purification to the cases the texts name, such as wine to vinegar and the tanning of hides.
Is pork gelatin halal?
In 1995 the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences held its eighth fiqh-medical seminar in Kuwait, bringing together jurists, chemists, pharmacists, and doctors, with representatives of al-Azhar, the Islamic Fiqh Academy in Jeddah, and the World Health Organization’s regional office. Its recommendation was direct: gelatin is permissible regardless of its origin, because it has been transformed into a new substance. Sheikh Abdullah al-Judai of the European Council for Fatwa and Research restated this ruling in 2020, when Muslims asked about vaccines.
A stricter view exists and deserves respect. Many South Asian Hanafi muftis and some halal certifiers hold that the collagen in gelatin is not fully transformed, so pork gelatin stays forbidden for them, and they accept only gelatin from fish or halal-slaughtered animals. The stronger view is the first: the process changes the substance completely, the classical principle applies, and the Quran describes the Prophet ﷺ as one who lifts burdens from his community:
وَيُحِلُّ لَهُمُ ٱلطَّيِّبَٰتِ وَيُحَرِّمُ عَلَيۡهِمُ ٱلۡخَبَـٰٓئِثَ وَيَضَعُ عَنۡهُمۡ إِصۡرَهُمۡ وَٱلۡأَغۡلَٰلَ ٱلَّتِي كَانَتۡ عَلَيۡهِمۡ
“He makes good things lawful for them and forbids what is foul, and lifts from them their burdens and the shackles that were upon them.”
Pork itself remains forbidden, as explained in Why is pork haram? The question with gelatin is whether pork is still there, and on the stronger view it is gone.
Is beef or fish gelatin halal?
Fish gelatin is halal by the agreement of every school, since “the game of the sea and its food” are lawful (5:96), as discussed in Is shrimp halal? Beef gelatin from cattle slaughtered by Muslims is halal by agreement. Beef gelatin from cattle slaughtered by others is halal on the transformation view, and many scholars also accept the slaughter of Christians and Jews (Can Muslims eat kosher or non-halal-certified meat?).
Is gelatin in sweets, medicines, and vaccines halal?
- Sweets and food. On the stronger view, sweets and desserts made with any gelatin are halal. Standard Haribo sweets made in Germany and the UK contain pork gelatin, and Haribo also produces a halal-certified range with beef gelatin in Turkey, for anyone who prefers it.
- Medicines and capsules. Medicine adds a second reason for ease: necessity, which the Quran recognizes even for pork itself (2:173). Take the medicine your doctor prescribes.
- Vaccines. In December 2020 the UAE Fatwa Council ruled that Covid-19 vaccines are permissible even if they contain pork gelatin. See Are vaccines halal?
The same principle of transformation applies to other modern questions, such as wine that has turned to vinegar (Is alcohol haram?).
Should I avoid gelatin to be safe?
Choosing fish or beef gelatin out of personal caution (waraʿ) is a fine choice. Making that choice a test of other people’s faith is not. A friend who eats a gummy bear follows the ruling of the Hanafi and Maliki schools, Ibn Hazm, Ibn Taymiyya, and an international council of jurists and scientists. Each person may follow the view they trust, with no blame on either side.
Closing
The Quran reminds us, in the middle of its rulings on fasting, of the spirit behind every ruling:
يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ بِكُمُ ٱلۡيُسۡرَ وَلَا يُرِيدُ بِكُمُ ٱلۡعُسۡرَ
“Allah wants ease for you, and He does not want hardship for you.”
May Allah bless what He provides for us and make us grateful for every good thing on our tables.
And Allah knows best. والله أعلم
Frequently asked questions
Is Haribo halal?
Standard Haribo sweets made in Germany and the UK use pork gelatin. Haribo also makes a halal-certified range with beef gelatin at its factory in Turkey. On the stronger view standard gelatin is permissible too, and those who follow the stricter view can choose the halal range.
Is gelatin in medicine and capsules halal?
Yes. Medicine falls under necessity in any case, and on the stronger view gelatin is transformed. The UAE Fatwa Council permitted Covid-19 vaccines containing pork gelatin in 2020.
What do Hanafi scholars say about gelatin?
The classical Hanafi school accepts transformation as purifying, with examples such as dung that burns to ash. Many South Asian Hanafi muftis today judge that gelatin is not fully transformed and avoid pork gelatin, so the Hanafi answer you hear depends on the scholar.
Is fish gelatin halal?
Yes, by agreement of every school, since the creatures of the sea are lawful (5:96). Fish gelatin is a good choice for anyone who prefers to avoid the difference of opinion.
