Is kissing before marriage haram?

Question 1131

Question

Is it haram for two people who are not married to kiss, and is a kiss considered zina in Islam?

Summary of answer

A kiss is not zina: Islamic law defines zina as intercourse alone. When a man confessed to kissing a woman, Allah revealed that good deeds wipe away misdeeds, and the Prophet ﷺ said this was for his whole community (Bukhari 526). The stronger view is that affection within a sincere, committed relationship, given with free consent and truthfulness, is a matter of intention and conscience before Allah. A kiss taken by pressure or deceit is haram.

Two people who love each other and hope to share a life often wonder how far affection may go before the wedding. Many young Muslims have been told that a kiss is zina, and carry heavy guilt for one. The Quran and the Sunnah are gentler and more precise. A kiss is not zina, and the Prophet ﷺ treated it as one of the light faults that prayer wipes away. The weight of a kiss depends on intention, consent, and the relationship in which it is given.

Is kissing zina?

In Islamic law, zina has a precise meaning: sexual intercourse between two people who are not married. The jurists of all four Sunni schools define it that way, and the Quran’s penalty concerns that act alone. A kiss falls outside the definition.

The Prophet ﷺ drew the same line himself. When Māʿiz ibn Mālik came to confess, the Prophet ﷺ tried to turn him away and asked, “Perhaps you only kissed, or touched, or looked?” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6824). The question shows that in his eyes a kiss was a different and much lighter thing.

A well-known hadith speaks of the “zina” of the eyes, which is looking, and of the tongue, which is speech; one version adds that the mouth’s share is kissing (Sunan Abi Dawud 2153). The same hadith ends, “and the private parts confirm it or deny it” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6243). The word is used by comparison for the paths that lead toward the act, and the act itself is what the law calls zina. Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him) said he knew of nothing that better resembled what the Quran calls al-lamam than this hadith of Abu Hurayra; al-lamam are the small faults the Quran says Allah forgives freely (Quran 53:32).

What did the Prophet ﷺ say to the man who kissed a woman?

A man once kissed a woman he was not married to, then came to the Prophet ﷺ troubled and told him. Allah revealed:

“Establish the prayer at both ends of the day and in the early hours of the night. Good deeds wipe away misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember.”

Quran 11:114

The man asked whether this was for him alone. The Prophet ﷺ answered:

«لِجَمِيعِ أُمَّتِي كُلِّهِمْ»

“For all of my community, every one of them.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 526

He did not shame the man, expose him, or punish him. He sent him back to prayer.

What do the scholars say about kissing before marriage?

Most classical jurists held that kissing someone one is not married to is forbidden, counting it among the minor sins (ṣaghāʾir) that prayer, charity, and repentance erase. That is a recognized view, held by many teachers today.

The texts themselves point to a gentler emphasis. They place a kiss among the lightest of faults, and the deeper concerns of the sharia in matters of intimacy lie elsewhere: protecting people from coercion, deception, exploitation, and broken trust, and protecting families and lineage. For this reason the stronger view is that affection between two people in a sincere, committed relationship, given with free consent and truthfulness, is a matter of their own intention and conscience before Allah. It is far from the major sins, and Allah is “vast in forgiveness” (53:32).

Many couples choose to save their first kiss for the nikah, and that is a beautiful choice. The nikah itself can be held early and modestly, without waiting for a large celebration (What happens at a Muslim wedding?). When is a kiss clearly haram?

  • Without consent. Taking a kiss from someone who does not want it is an assault on their dignity, and the Prophet ﷺ forbade all harm (Sunan Ibn Majah 2341).
  • Through deceit. Promising marriage or love one does not intend, to win intimacy, is a betrayal of trust (amāna).
  • Against a marriage. Kissing someone who is married to another, or while married oneself, wrongs a spouse who has been promised faithfulness.
  • To use someone. Affection that treats another person as a passing pleasure, without care for their heart, contradicts the dignity Allah gave every child of Adam (17:70).

The same guidance applies to same-sex couples (Can two Muslims of the same sex marry?).

What if I feel guilty about a kiss?

Return to Allah the way the man in the hadith did: pray, do good, ask forgiveness, and move on in peace. There is no need to confess to anyone else, and no one has the right to shame you. If a relationship went further than you intended, the door of mercy is just as wide (Can zina be forgiven?).

A closing word

The Prophet ﷺ answered a troubled man with a verse about prayer and a promise for the whole community. May Allah bless every love that seeks Him, guard every heart from harm, and make the path to a good marriage easy for all who hope for one.

And Allah knows best. والله أعلم

Frequently asked questions

Is kissing haram after the nikah but before the rukhsati or wedding party?

No. The nikah contract makes the couple husband and wife, and all affection between them is halal from that moment. The later celebration or move into a shared home is a cultural custom that families may arrange as they like.

Is kissing your spouse haram in Ramadan?

No. Aisha reported that the Prophet ﷺ kissed and embraced his wives while fasting (Bukhari 1927). The jurists advise spouses who fear it will lead further to wait until after iftar.

Does kissing break wudu?

The schools differ. Hanafis hold that it does not break wudu; Shafiʿis hold that skin-to-skin contact between a man and a woman not closely related breaks it; Hanbalis hold that touch breaks wudu when there is desire; Malikis hold the same, and also that a kiss on the mouth breaks wudu even without desire.

Is a kiss on the cheek as a greeting haram?

A kiss of greeting or tenderness within the family is a sunna of mercy; the Prophet ﷺ kissed his grandson al-Ḥasan (Bukhari 5997). Greetings among friends follow local custom (ʿurf) and the comfort of the people involved.
