Can you listen to the Quran while sleeping or doing other things?
Question 1263
Question
Is it permissible to fall asleep listening to the Quran, or to play recitation while driving, cooking, working, or showering?
Summary of answer
Listening to the Quran while falling asleep, driving, cooking, or working is halal and a source of blessing. The Prophet ﷺ recited while reclining and before sleep, and the Quran praises those who remember Allah lying on their sides (3:191). The command to listen in silence (7:204) asks for full attention when you can give it, above all in prayer. No sin is written for a sleeper, and the recitation brings rest to the heart.
Answer
الحمد لله Praise be to Allah.

Listening to the Quran while you fall asleep, drive, cook, or work is halal, and it fills ordinary hours with the remembrance of Allah. The Prophet ﷺ recited the Quran while reclining and recited it every night as he lay down to sleep. The Quran’s command to “listen and be silent” asks for your full attention when you can give it, especially in prayer, and it does not forbid recitation as a companion through the day.
Is it haram to listen to the Quran while sleeping?
It is permissible and good. The Quran describes the people of understanding as those who remember Allah in every posture:
ٱلَّذِينَ يَذۡكُرُونَ ٱللَّهَ قِيَٰمٗا وَقُعُودٗا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِهِمۡ
“Those who remember Allah standing, sitting, and lying on their sides.”
The Prophet ﷺ lived this verse. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said that he would lean his head in her lap and recite the Quran (Sahih al-Bukhari 297). Every night, when he went to bed, he cupped his hands, recited Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ, al-Falaq, and al-Nās, blew gently into his palms, and wiped them over his body three times (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017). He also confirmed that whoever recites Āyat al-Kursī (2:255) on going to bed has a guardian from Allah until morning (Sahih al-Bukhari 2311).
Playing a recitation as you fall asleep continues that Sunnah. If sleep takes you in the middle of a sūra, no blame is written: the Prophet ﷺ said that the pen is lifted from the sleeper until he wakes (Sunan Abi Dawud 4403, graded sahih by al-Albani). You chose to end your day with Allah’s words, and that intention is yours.
What does “listen and be silent” in Quran 7:204 mean?
The verse reads:
وَإِذَا قُرِئَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ فَٱسۡتَمِعُواْ لَهُۥ وَأَنصِتُواْ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُرۡحَمُونَ
“When the Quran is recited, listen to it and be silent, so that you may receive mercy.”
The Sunnah applies this command most directly to the prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said of the imam, “When he recites, be silent” (Sunan al-Nasa’i 921, graded hasan sahih by al-Albani). Outside the prayer the scholars differed over how strictly the verse binds, and the sound reading is that it describes the best way to receive the Quran: with an open ear and a still tongue, wherever that is possible. The verse attaches mercy to that attention; it does not make a sin of hearing the Quran while your hands are busy.
The Prophet ﷺ himself loved to listen. He asked ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd to recite to him, and when Ibn Masʿūd reached the verse about each nation’s witness on the Day of Judgment, the Prophet ﷺ said, “That is enough for now,” and his eyes were streaming with tears (Sahih al-Bukhari 5050). Set aside some time each day for that kind of listening, alongside the recitation that accompanies your chores.
Can you listen to the Quran while driving, cooking, or working?
Yes. Recitation during lawful work turns a commute or a kitchen into a place of remembrance. A few courtesies honor the Quran without making it a burden:
- Lower or pause it for conversation. When you begin talking with someone, turn the recitation down so it is not drowned out.
- Choose a time for full attention. Background listening is a blessing, and it is sweeter still when you also sit with the Quran and its meaning. Reading a translation helps (Can you read the Quran in English?).
- Let it carry you to prayer. Many people find that a recitation in the evening draws them to stand for the night prayer (How do you pray tahajjud?).
Can you listen to the Quran in the bathroom or shower?
Many scholars disliked reciting the Quran aloud inside a toilet, out of reverence for Allah’s words, and it is good manners to pause an audio recitation while using the toilet itself. This is a matter of courtesy (adab); no one sins by forgetting a phone in their pocket. Recitation playing from the next room while you shower is lighter still, and many people prefer to wait until they step out.
Do you need wudu to listen to the Quran?
No. Listening requires no ritual purity at all, and a woman on her period may listen as much as she likes; the Prophet ﷺ recited with his head in the lap of Aisha while she was menstruating (Sahih al-Bukhari 297). The scholars’ discussions of wudu concern touching a printed copy, explained in Can you touch the Quran without wudu?, and the question of reciting during menstruation is answered in Can women pray or read the Quran on their period?
Playing the Quran softly in a home, for a restless child or a sick relative, is also a good practice. Allah calls the Quran “a healing and a mercy for the believers” (Quran 17:82).
A closing word
Many people reach for a recitation at night because the day has left them anxious. The Quran knows that need:
أَلَا بِذِكۡرِ ٱللَّهِ تَطۡمَئِنُّ ٱلۡقُلُوبُ
“Truly, in the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest.”
May His words be the last thing you hear at night and the first thing your heart turns to in the morning.
And Allah knows best. والله أعلم
Frequently asked questions
Is it disrespectful to fall asleep while the Quran is playing?
No. Drifting off to the words of Allah is a way of ending the day in His remembrance, and the Prophet ﷺ said that the pen is lifted from the sleeper until he wakes (Sunan Abi Dawud 4403). Keep the volume gentle, and let the recitation stop on a timer if you like.
Do I need wudu to listen to the Quran?
No. Listening to the Quran needs no wudu, and a woman on her period may listen freely. The Prophet ﷺ recited the Quran while resting his head in Aisha's lap during her period (Sahih al-Bukhari 297).
Can I listen to the Quran while working or studying?
Yes. Recitation in the background of lawful work is a blessing in the day. When a verse catches your heart, pause and listen; that attention is where the mercy of 7:204 is promised.
Is it haram to play the Quran in the bathroom?
It is permissible. Out of reverence, though, it is better to pause the recitation while using the toilet itself. Many scholars disliked reciting the Quran in a toilet, and that courtesy extends naturally to audio.
