If you are asking whether it is haram to ask Allah for death, you may be carrying something very heavy right now. Allah sees that weight, and His Messenger ﷺ spoke to people in exactly this place. He asked the believers not to wish for death or pray for it because of a hardship, and he gave them better words to say.
The wish itself, when it rises unbidden in a hurting heart, is pardoned by Allah. What the Prophet ﷺ asked is that we turn it into a prayer that leaves the timing with Allah, and that we reach for help. Your life is precious to Allah, and it is worth protecting tonight.
Is it haram to wish for death in Islam?
Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
«لاَ يَتَمَنَّيَنَّ أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَوْتَ مِنْ ضُرٍّ أَصَابَهُ، فَإِنْ كَانَ لاَ بُدَّ فَاعِلاً فَلْيَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ أَحْيِنِي مَا كَانَتِ الْحَيَاةُ خَيْرًا لِي، وَتَوَفَّنِي إِذَا كَانَتِ الْوَفَاةُ خَيْرًا لِي»
“Let none of you wish for death because of a harm that has befallen him. If he cannot help saying something, let him say: O Allah, keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and take me when death is better for me.”
The prohibition concerns wishing for death because of a hardship (ḍurr, ضرّ): illness, loss, loneliness, despair. In another narration he said, “Let none of you wish for death, nor pray for it before it comes” (Sahih Muslim 2682). Asking Allah to end one’s life because of pain is something the Prophet ﷺ forbade, out of love for the one who suffers.
His words “if he cannot help saying something” show that he knew such words would sometimes press to come out. So he gave a duʿāʾ that tells Allah the truth of the pain and trusts Him with what lies ahead.
Is it a sin to have thoughts of wanting to die?
The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah has pardoned his community for what their souls whisper to them (Sahih al-Bukhari 5269). Dark thoughts that arrive in a season of pain fall under that pardon; they are a sign of hurt that calls for care.
Telling someone about them so that you can be helped is a good and brave act. Some Companions once came to the Prophet ﷺ troubled by thoughts they found too dreadful to say aloud. He listened, and told them that their dread was itself a sign of clear faith (Sahih Muslim 132a).
Even Maryam (peace be upon her), alone and afraid in the pains of labor, cried out: “I wish I had died before this and been utterly forgotten” (Quran 19:23). Allah answered her at once with comfort: “Do not grieve. Your Lord has placed a stream beneath you” (19:24). Her story is told in What does the Quran say about Mary?
Why does Islam ask us to hold on to life?
The Prophet ﷺ also gave the reason:
«لاَ يَزِيدُ الْمُؤْمِنَ عُمْرُهُ إِلاَّ خَيْرًا»
“A believer’s life only adds to his good.”
The one who does good may add to it, he said, and the one who has done wrong may yet set things right (Sahih al-Bukhari 7235). Each day you remain is a day in which Allah can bring a prayer, a kindness, a healing, or a door opening that you cannot see yet.
Think too of the people whose lives are bound up with yours: a mother, a friend, a child who looks up to you. Whoever saves one life, the Quran says, has as good as saved all of humanity (5:32), and your own life is one of those lives.
The Prophet ﷺ himself knew days of heaviness. Once, when illness kept him from the night prayer for a few nights, a woman mocked him, saying that the one who came to him had forsaken him, and Allah answered with Sūrat al-Ḍuḥā (Sahih al-Bukhari 4950):
مَا وَدَّعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلَىٰ
“Your Lord has not abandoned you, and He is not displeased with you.”
What does Allah say to someone who has lost hope?
The prophet Jacob (peace be upon him) lost Joseph, and years later Benjamin as well. Grieving, he still told his sons: “Do not despair of Allah’s relief” (Quran 12:87). And Allah promised, twice in a row:
فَإِنَّ مَعَ ٱلۡعُسۡرِ يُسۡرًا إِنَّ مَعَ ٱلۡعُسۡرِ يُسۡرٗا
“So truly, with hardship comes ease. Truly, with hardship comes ease.”
ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb drew the lesson for a worried commander: “one hardship will never overcome two eases” (Muwatta Malik 964). Allah’s door stays open whatever has happened (39:53; see Does Allah forgive all sins?).
Is wanting to die a sign of weak faith?
Very often the wish to die is a symptom of depression or another illness, which can test the most faithful. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Seek treatment, for Allah has not sent down a disease without sending down its cure” (Sunan Abi Dawud 3855, graded sahih by al-Albani). Treatment for depression works, and seeking it is part of trusting Allah. See Is depression a sign of weak iman? and Can Muslims see a therapist?
What can I do when I feel this way?
- Tell someone today: a friend, a relative, an imam, a doctor, or a helpline such as 988, Samaritans, or Naseeha. Stay near people who care about you.
- Say the Prophet’s duʿāʾ. When the words “I want to die” come, turn them into “O Allah, keep me alive while life is better for me.”
- Use the prayer of distress. In hard moments the Prophet ﷺ would say: “There is no god but Allah, the Mighty, the Forbearing. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the mighty Throne. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth, Lord of the noble Throne” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6346). More in How do you make dua?
Allah is closer to you than you can feel tonight. May He lift the weight from your heart, surround you with people who love you, and show you the ease He promised, and the many good days still waiting in your life.
And Allah knows best. والله أعلم
Frequently asked questions
Is it a sin to have thoughts of wanting to die?
Thoughts that rise unbidden in a suffering heart fall under the pardon the Prophet ﷺ described: Allah has forgiven his community what their souls whisper to them (Sahih al-Bukhari 5269). Such thoughts are a sign of pain that deserves care, so tell someone you trust and reach out to a helpline or a doctor today.
What dua should I say when I feel like I want to die?
The Prophet ﷺ taught: "Allāhumma aḥyinī mā kānat al-ḥayātu khayran lī, wa tawaffanī idhā kānat al-wafātu khayran lī": O Allah, keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and take me when death is better for me (Sahih al-Bukhari 5671). Then speak to Allah in your own words about everything you are carrying.
Is it haram to wish you had never been born?
When the pains of labor overwhelmed Maryam (peace be upon her), she said, "I wish I had died before this" (19:23), and Allah answered her at once with comfort, water, and food. Words like these come from pain, and Allah meets pain with mercy. Bring the feeling to Him in duʿāʾ, and to someone who can help you carry it.
Can I ask Allah to let me die as a Muslim?
Yes. The prophet Joseph (peace be upon him) prayed, "Take me as one who has submitted to You, and join me with the righteous" (12:101). This asks for a good ending whenever Allah's appointed time comes, and it is a beloved duʿāʾ for every believer.
