Is it haram to sleep on your stomach?
Question 1164
Question
Is it a sin to sleep or lie on your stomach, and what is the Sunnah way to sleep?
Summary of answer
Sleeping on your stomach is permitted. A few reports say the Prophet ﷺ woke a man lying face down in the mosque and called it a way of lying that Allah dislikes. Hadith critics differed over their chains, and the scholars who accept them treat the posture as disliked at most, a matter of etiquette. Pain, illness, pregnancy, or any real need removes even that. The sunna is to begin sleep on the right side with the remembrance of Allah.
Answer
الحمد لله Praise be to Allah.

Some people fall asleep only on their stomach, and then hear that the Prophet ﷺ disliked it. Sleeping on your stomach is permitted. A small group of reports describes the Prophet ﷺ waking a man who lay face down, and the scholars who accept them treat the posture as disliked at most, a matter of etiquette. Pain, illness, pregnancy, or any real need removes even that dislike. Sleep itself is one of Allah’s mercies, and the Sunnah gives it a beautiful beginning.
What does the hadith about sleeping on the stomach say?
Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ saw a man lying on his stomach and said:
«إِنَّ هَذِهِ ضَجْعَةٌ لاَ يُحِبُّهَا اللَّهُ»
“This is a way of lying that Allah does not love.”
A Companion named Ṭikhfa al-Ghifārī, one of the poor who lodged in the mosque, told a fuller story. After a meal at Aisha’s house, he slept in the mosque, and before dawn he was lying on his stomach when someone nudged him with his foot and said, “This is a way of lying that Allah dislikes.” He looked up and saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ (Sunan Abi Dawud 5040; Sunan Ibn Majah 3723). In another report, the Prophet ﷺ told Abu Dharr that this was how the people of the Fire lie (Sunan Ibn Majah 3724).
How strong are these reports?
The hadith critics discussed these chains at length. Al-Tirmidhi noted that the narrators disagreed even on the Companion’s name, giving it as Ṭihfa, Ṭikhfa, or Ṭighfa. Al-Albani graded the version in Sunan Abi Dawud weak and accepted the versions in al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah. A report can be accepted and still carry a light ruling, and weighing chains this way is part of how the scholars read every hadith (Are all hadith authentic?).
The setting matters too. Most of the reports take place in the mosque, a public space where people slept side by side, and in each the Prophet ﷺ corrected the man with a light touch and a short word.
Is sleeping on your stomach haram or makruh?
The scholars who accept these reports held lying on the stomach disliked (makrūh), never forbidden. The wording “Allah does not love” belongs to the language of etiquette, and none of the reports names a penalty for it. Dislike in Islamic law falls away with need. A person with back pain, a pregnant woman who finds a position that brings rest, a patient whose doctor recommends lying prone, and anyone who can only fall asleep that way are all free to sleep as their body requires:
لَا يُكَلِّفُ ٱللَّهُ نَفۡسًا إِلَّا وُسۡعَهَا
“Allah does not burden any soul beyond what it can bear.”
No one is accountable for how they turn once asleep. The Prophet ﷺ said that the pen is lifted from three, the first of them “the sleeper until he wakes” (Sunan Abi Dawud 4403, graded sahih by al-Albani). For babies, follow medical advice, which today is that infants sleep on their backs.
How did the Prophet ﷺ sleep?
The sunna is to begin sleep on the right side. The Prophet ﷺ told al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib: “When you go to your bed, make wudu as you do for prayer, then lie on your right side,” and he taught him a duʿāʾ of surrender to say as his last words before sleep (Sahih al-Bukhari 247). He himself would place his hand beneath his cheek as he lay down (Sahih al-Bukhari 6314).
He did not keep to one position. A Companion saw him lying on his back in the mosque with one leg resting over the other, and Umar and ʿUthmān did the same (Sahih al-Bukhari 475). The sunna gives sleep a gentle beginning, and the body is free to find its rest after that. Many Muslims sleep early so they can rise for the night prayer (How do you pray tahajjud?), and some fall asleep to recitation (Can you listen to the Quran while sleeping?).
Why does the Quran call sleep a sign?
The Quran counts sleep among Allah’s gifts:
وَجَعَلۡنَا نَوۡمَكُمۡ سُبَاتٗا
“And We made your sleep a rest.”
It calls our sleep by night and day one of His signs (30:23), and it describes sleep as a small departure of the soul, which Allah holds and then releases until its appointed time (39:42). Each night is a lesson in trust: we lay down our cares, and Allah keeps watch. A posture that helps you rest serves that mercy, and fear about sleeping positions has no place in it (Superstitions vs Islam).
A closing duʿāʾ
When the Prophet ﷺ lay down, he would say:
«اللَّهُمَّ بِاسْمِكَ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا»
“O Allah, in Your name I die and I live.”
And when he woke, he praised Allah who gave life after sleep, to whom is the return. Lie down on your right side with His name on your tongue, turn however your body needs through the night, and wake to His praise.
And Allah knows best. والله أعلم
Frequently asked questions
Is it okay to sleep on your back in Islam?
Yes. The Prophet ﷺ himself lay on his back in the mosque with one leg over the other, and Umar and ʿUthmān did the same. The sunna is to begin sleep on the right side, and any comfortable position after that is permitted.
What if I roll onto my stomach during the night?
There is nothing on you. The Prophet ﷺ said that the pen is lifted from the sleeper until he wakes, so no one is held to account for how they turn in their sleep.
Can a woman lie on her stomach, or a child sleep that way?
The ruling is the same for women and men: permitted, and disliked at most by those who accept the reports. For babies, follow medical advice, which today is for infants to sleep on their backs, since a child's safety comes first.
Is lying on your stomach while reading or resting the same?
Yes, the same ruling applies. Lying on the stomach to read, rest, or ease back pain is permitted, and need of any kind removes the dislike some scholars attached to it.
