Is playing poker or cards without money haram?
Question 1183
Question
Is it permissible to play poker, rummy, or other card games for fun with no money involved, and what about poker apps and online gambling?
Summary of answer
Playing poker or any card game with no money at stake is halal when it does not crowd out prayer and duties. The Quran forbids maysir (5:90), the wager in which each player stakes money to win what the others lose, and the stake is what turns a game into gambling. Play-money apps and free tournaments with sponsored prizes are lawful, while real-money online poker, casinos, and betting are haram.
Answer
الحمد لله Praise be to Allah.

Cards come out at Eid gatherings, on long winter evenings, and on family holidays, and poker with plastic chips is a favorite among friends. Many Muslims have heard that every card game is forbidden. Playing poker, rummy, Uno, or any card game with no money at stake is halal on the stronger view, as long as it does not crowd out prayer and duties. What the Quran forbids is the wager. Gambling for real money, online or at a table, is haram.
What makes a game gambling?
The Quran names gambling (maysir, ميسر) alongside wine and idolatry and commands the believers to keep away from it:
إِنَّمَا ٱلۡخَمۡرُ وَٱلۡمَيۡسِرُ وَٱلۡأَنصَابُ وَٱلۡأَزۡلَٰمُ رِجۡسٞ مِّنۡ عَمَلِ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنِ فَٱجۡتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُفۡلِحُونَ
“Wine, gambling, idolatrous altars, and divining arrows are a filth of Satan’s making. Keep away from them, so that you may prosper.”
Maysir is a game in which each player stakes something of value so that the winner takes what the losers lose. The next verse explains why it is forbidden: it breeds enmity and hatred and turns hearts from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer (5:91). The Prophet ﷺ took even the invitation seriously, saying that whoever tells a friend, “Come, let me gamble with you,” should give something in charity (Sahih al-Bukhari 4860).
The stake is what turns a game into gambling. Cards, dice, and races can all be played with money on the line, and all can be played without it. When nothing of value passes from loser to winner, there is no maysir.
Is playing cards haram without money?
The scholars differed (ikhtalafa al-ʿulamāʾ). Many scholars, especially in the Hanbali school and among strict contemporary muftis, forbid card games even without money. Their evidence is the hadith in Sahih Muslim: “Whoever plays nardashīr, it is as though he dipped his hand in the flesh and blood of swine” (Sahih Muslim 2260). Nard was a Persian dice game, and these scholars extend its ruling to any game decided by chance.
The stronger view (al-rājiḥ) is that card games without stakes are permissible, for four reasons:
- The Quran’s ruling attaches to the wager. Allah named maysir, and maysir is the stake.
- Nard was tied to betting. In its time nard was the gambler’s game. Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta, explaining in 2019 why most scholars permit chess, noted that they set nard apart because it rests on chance and gambling. Card games share chance with nard, and with no stake they share none of its gambling.
- The original ruling of things is permission. Islamic law holds that what Allah has not forbidden is permitted (al-aṣl fī al-ashyāʾ al-ibāḥa).
- Play has a place in a believer’s life. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) played with dolls and with her friends in the Prophet’s ﷺ presence, and he called her friends back to play with her when they hid from him (Sahih al-Bukhari 6130).
The conditions are the same as for chess and video games (Is chess haram?, Are video games haram?): no money at stake, no missed prayers, no cursing or quarrels, and no nights lost at the table.
Is poker haram if you play with fake money?
Poker played with chips or points that cannot be exchanged for money involves no stake, so it is a game like any other. The same holds for free poker apps and free-entry tournaments in which a sponsor puts up the prize, since no player pays in to fund what the winner takes.
Two cases call for care. A tournament in which every player pays an entry fee and the fees make up the prize pool is gambling, whatever it is called. Apps that sell chips for real money are a purchase of entertainment when the chips can never be cashed out, but many are designed like slot machines, and a believer who notices that pull should step away.
Is online gambling haram?
Real-money online poker, online casinos, and betting sites are maysir in its most dangerous form: open every hour of the day, paid with a card, and hidden from family until the debts surface. They are haram by the same verses, and their harm reaches whole households. Risky financial speculation can drift the same way (Is day trading or options trading haram?), and the full ruling on gambling and the lottery is in Is gambling or the lottery haram?

Did Muslims play cards in history?
Yes. One of the oldest surviving packs of playing cards is a Mamluk deck from the fifteenth century, kept in the Topkapı Palace in Istanbul, with suits of cups, coins, swords, and polo sticks. Cards of this kind reached Europe from the Muslim world in the late fourteenth century, and the four suits of many European decks descend from them. Games and pastimes have always had a place in Muslim life, alongside the prayer that gives life its shape (Is it haram to watch movies and anime?).
A closing word
When some in Medina left the Friday sermon for a caravan and the sound of entertainment, the Quran answered gently:
قُلۡ مَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ خَيۡرٞ مِّنَ ٱللَّهۡوِ وَمِنَ ٱلتِّجَٰرَةِۚ وَٱللَّهُ خَيۡرُ ٱلرَّـٰزِقِينَ
“Say: what is with Allah is better than amusement and better than trade, and Allah is the best of providers.”
Enjoy a game with the people you love, keep your money out of it, and rise from the table when the call to prayer comes.
And Allah knows best. والله أعلم
Frequently asked questions
Is it haram to play poker with fake money?
No. Chips or play money that cannot be exchanged for real money involve no stake, so the game is not gambling. Keep it free of foul language and away from prayer times.
Is Uno or rummy haram?
Family card games played for fun are halal on the stronger view. Some scholars forbid all card games by analogy with the dice game nard, and those who follow them act in good faith.
Is buying chips in a poker app haram?
Chips that can never be cashed out are a purchase of entertainment, and many scholars treat them like buying any game. Apps built to mimic the thrill of the casino are still wiser to avoid, since they train the heart for the real wager.
Is it haram to watch poker on TV or online?
Watching a game is not gambling. A Muslim may still prefer not to fill his hours with high-stakes betting presented as entertainment.
