Can you pray with shoes on?

Question 1199

Question

Is it permissible to perform the prayer while wearing shoes, sandals, or boots, at home, outdoors, or in a mosque?

Summary of answer

Praying with shoes on is permitted, and the Prophet ﷺ often did it. Anas confirmed that he prayed in his sandals (Sahih al-Bukhari 386), and he told worshipers to check their footwear at the mosque door, wipe off any dirt, and pray in it (Sunan Abi Dawud 650). Clean shoes are the only condition. In a carpeted mosque, taking them off honors the place and the people who prostrate there.

Answer

الحمد لله Praise be to Allah.

A silk and wool prayer rug with an arched niche filled with red flowering vines, framed by wide borders of woven inscription.

Many Muslims grew up taking off their shoes at the door of every mosque and every prayer mat, and are surprised to learn that the Prophet ﷺ often prayed in his sandals. You can pray with shoes on. The Sunnah shows him praying both barefoot and in sandals, and he told his Companions that clean footwear is fit for prayer. The only condition is that the shoes are free of filth, and the only reason to take them off is cleanliness and the custom of the place.

Did the Prophet pray with shoes on?

A student of Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) once asked him whether the Prophet ﷺ prayed in his sandals. Anas answered with one word: “Yes” (Sahih al-Bukhari 386). Another Companion reported, “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray barefoot and in sandals” (Sunan Abi Dawud 653, graded hasan sahih by al-Albani).

The clearest teaching came from a moment in congregation. While leading the prayer, the Prophet ﷺ took off his sandals and set them to his left, and the people behind him threw off theirs. Afterward he asked why. They said they had followed him. He told them that Jibrīl had come to him and informed him that there was dirt on his sandals, and then he said:

«إِذَا جَاءَ أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَلْيَنْظُرْ فَإِنْ رَأَى فِي نَعْلَيْهِ قَذَرًا أَوْ أَذًى فَلْيَمْسَحْهُ وَلْيُصَلِّ فِيهِمَا»

“When one of you comes to the mosque, let him look. If he sees dirt or anything unclean on his sandals, let him wipe it off and pray in them.”

Sunan Abi Dawud 650

Al-Albani graded this hadith sahih. In a further report the Prophet ﷺ encouraged praying in sandals and footwear as a practice of the young Muslim community, distinct from the custom of the Jews of his city, who removed theirs for prayer (Sunan Abi Dawud 652). On the strength of these reports, some scholars counted praying in clean sandals a sunna, and the schools of law agree that it is permitted.

What does the Quran say about dressing for prayer?

The Quran asks believers to come to prayer well dressed:

۞يَٰبَنِيٓ ءَادَمَ خُذُواْ زِينَتَكُمۡ عِندَ كُلِّ مَسۡجِدٖ

“Children of Adam, take your adornment at every place of prayer.”

Quran 7:31

Footwear is part of a person’s dress, and good, clean shoes belong to the adornment the verse describes. Some readers ask about Moses (peace be upon him), who was told at the burning bush, “Take off your sandals: you are in the sacred valley of Ṭuwā” (Quran 20:12). That command belonged to a unique moment in a holy valley. The Prophet ﷺ, who knew the verse, prayed in his sandals all the same, and his practice shows how Muslims are to pray.

Do my shoes need to be clean?

Yes. Prayer requires a clean body, clothes, and place, and shoes count as clothing. Look at the soles before you pray, as the Prophet ﷺ instructed. If you stepped in something unclean, the Sunnah offers an easy remedy: “When one of you treads on filth with his sandals, the earth purifies them” (Sunan Abi Dawud 385, graded sahih by al-Albani). Rubbing the soles on clean ground or grass is enough. Ordinary street dust does not make shoes impure.

Many Muslims keep a pair of shoes for indoors, or slip-on sandals for the office prayer room, which makes this easy.

Should I take my shoes off in the mosque?

In the Prophet’s own mosque the floor was earth and pebbles, and the roof was made of palm branches. Abu Saʿīd al-Khudrī saw the Prophet ﷺ prostrate on a rainy day “in water and mud, until I saw the trace of mud on his forehead” (Sahih al-Bukhari 669). Shoes did no harm to a floor like that.

Today most mosques are carpeted, and hundreds of foreheads touch the same carpet every day. Leaving shoes at the door keeps that floor clean for everyone, and it follows the custom (ʿurf) of the place, which the sharia respects. The Prophet ﷺ cared about the person beside you as well: he told worshipers who removed their sandals not to leave them where they would bother a neighbor, and to place them between their feet or pray in them (Sunan Abi Dawud 655). The same courtesy applies when you pray in a church, a multi-faith room, or a friend’s home (Can Muslims enter or pray in a church?).

Can I pray with shoes on outdoors, at work, or while traveling?

Yes. Clean shoes are fine for prayer in a park, a parking lot, an airport, a hospital corridor, or on a trail. People who wear medical or orthopedic footwear, or who cannot easily bend to remove boots, may keep them on without hesitation. The Quran says of the whole religion:

وَمَا جَعَلَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ فِي ٱلدِّينِ مِنۡ حَرَجٖ

“He has placed no hardship on you in religion.”

Quran 22:78

If you made wudu and then put on socks or boots, you may wipe over them at your next wudu (How to make wudu). Prayer on the road has its own concessions, set out in How do you pray while traveling?

The steps of the prayer itself are the same in shoes or barefoot; see How to pray in Islam.

A closing word

The Prophet ﷺ counted it among the gifts given to his community that the whole earth became a place of prayer:

«جُعِلَتْ لِيَ الأَرْضُ مَسْجِدًا وَطَهُورًا، وَأَيُّمَا رَجُلٍ مِنْ أُمَّتِي أَدْرَكَتْهُ الصَّلاَةُ فَلْيُصَلِّ»

“The earth has been made for me a place of prayer and a means of purification, so whoever of my community is reached by the time of prayer, let him pray.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 438

Wherever the time finds you, and whatever you are wearing, check that your shoes are clean, face the qibla, and pray.

And Allah knows best. والله أعلم

Frequently asked questions

Is it disrespectful to pray with shoes on?

No. The Prophet ﷺ prayed in his sandals in his own mosque, and his Companions did the same. Respect lies in clean footwear, a clean place, and a present heart.

Can I pray in shoes at home or at work?

Yes. If your shoes are clean, you may pray in them anywhere: at home, in an office, in a park, at an airport, or on a mountain trail.

Do I have to take off my shoes to pray in a mosque?

Follow the mosque's custom. Most mosques today are carpeted and ask everyone to leave their shoes at the door, so that foreheads touch a clean floor. Outdoor prayer grounds often allow clean shoes.

Where should I put my shoes during the prayer?

The Prophet ﷺ taught that a worshiper should not leave his sandals where they bother the person beside him, and should place them between his feet or pray in them (Sunan Abi Dawud 655).
