Can Muslims enter or pray in a church?

Question 1117

Question

Is it permissible for a Muslim to enter a church, attend a Christian service, or perform the Muslim prayer inside a church?

Summary of answer

Entering a church and praying in one are permissible. The Prophet ﷺ said the whole earth was made a place of prayer for him, Ibn Abbas prayed in churches, the Hanbali school permits prayer in a clean church, and Egypt's Dar al-Ifta ruled in 2020 that a Muslim's prayer in a church is valid. The Quran names churches among the houses Allah protects (22:40).

Answer

الحمد لله Praise be to Allah.

The stone bell tower of a desert monastery rises against a blue sky, and just behind it stands the white minaret of the mosque inside the monastery walls.

Many Muslims are invited to church: for a friend’s wedding, a grandparent’s funeral, a Christmas carol service, or a concert in a cathedral. Some converts still visit the churches where they grew up. The stronger view (al-rājiḥ) is that Muslims may enter a church, attend its services as respectful guests, and even perform their own prayer inside it. The Prophet ﷺ said the whole earth was made a place of prayer for him, his Companion Ibn Abbas prayed in churches, and the Quran itself names churches among the houses of worship that Allah protects.

What does the Quran say about churches?

The Quran mentions churches with honor. In Sūrat al-Ḥajj, it explains why Allah allows the oppressed to defend themselves:

وَلَوۡلَا دَفۡعُ ٱللَّهِ ٱلنَّاسَ بَعۡضَهُم بِبَعۡضٖ لَّهُدِّمَتۡ صَوَٰمِعُ وَبِيَعٞ وَصَلَوَٰتٞ وَمَسَٰجِدُ يُذۡكَرُ فِيهَا ٱسۡمُ ٱللَّهِ كَثِيرٗا

“Had Allah not held back some people by means of others, monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, where the name of Allah is much remembered, would have been torn down.”

Quran 22:40

Monasteries, churches, and synagogues stand in the same verse as mosques, all of them under Allah’s protection. The Quran also speaks warmly of the Christian clergy whose humility draws them near to the believers:

وَلَتَجِدَنَّ أَقۡرَبَهُم مَّوَدَّةٗ لِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّا نَصَٰرَىٰۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّ مِنۡهُمۡ قِسِّيسِينَ وَرُهۡبَانٗا وَأَنَّهُمۡ لَا يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ

“You will find the nearest in affection to the believers those who say, ‘We are Christians.’ That is because among them are priests and monks, and they are free of arrogance.”

Quran 5:82

Can Muslims pray in a church?

Yes. The Prophet ﷺ taught that the whole earth is a place of prayer:

«وَجُعِلَتْ لِيَ الأَرْضُ مَسْجِدًا وَطَهُورًا»

“The earth has been made for me a place of prayer and a means of purification.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 335

Imam al-Bukhari gave a chapter of his Sahih the title “Praying in a church” (bāb al-ṣalāh fī al-bīʿa). In it he records that Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) used to pray in churches, avoiding only those with statues, and that Umar said Muslims kept out of churches with images because of the images in them. The concern of the early scholars was statues and pictures, which they feared would distract the worshipper. The church itself was a clean place where a Muslim could pray.

The Hanbali school permits praying in a clean church. Ibn Qudāma (d. 1223) wrote in al-Mughnī that there is no harm in praying in a clean church, and the later Hanbali authority al-Mardāwī recorded that the preferred view of the school permits it without dislike. Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr reported agreement that such a prayer is valid. Some Hanafi and Shafiʿi jurists disliked entering churches because of their images, and that view is held sincerely; it is a dislike (karāha) and no prohibition. In October 2020, Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta ruled that a Muslim’s prayer in a church is lawful, like prayer anywhere else on earth.

Did Christians pray in the Prophet’s mosque?

The biographer Ibn Isḥāq reports that when a delegation of Christians from Najran visited the Prophet ﷺ in Medina, the time of their prayer came while they were in his mosque. They stood to pray toward the east, and when some people moved to stop them, the Prophet ﷺ said, “Let them be.” Hadith critics have judged the chain of this report weak, and Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya drew from it in Zād al-Maʿād that the People of the Book may enter mosques and pray there when the occasion arises. The spirit of the story matches the rest of the Prophet’s dealings with Christians, whose envoys he received with honor. For the other direction, see Can non-Muslims enter a mosque?

What did Umar do at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre?

When Jerusalem opened to the Muslims in the 630s, the Patriarch Sophronius received the caliph Umar and, as the well-known account tells it, invited him to pray inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre when the time of prayer came. Umar declined and prayed outside on the steps, explaining that if he prayed inside, later Muslims might claim the church as a mosque. A mosque bearing his name still stands across from the church today. Umar’s concern was to protect the church for the Christians, and Muslims remember the story as a lesson in respect for the houses of worship of others.

Can Muslims attend a church service?

Yes. Attending a Christian service as a guest is a form of kindness to family and friends, which the Quran encourages toward peaceful people of other faiths (Quran 60:8). A Muslim guest can stand and sit with the congregation, listen to the readings, enjoy the music, and join in any prayer whose words a Muslim can say with a sincere heart. Christians do not expect a guest to recite their creed or take communion, and you can remain seated during those moments.

A closing word

Many churches have opened their halls to Muslims who had nowhere else to pray, and the Ibn Rushd-Goethe Mosque in Berlin began its life in rooms of a Protestant church. When you step into a church, you step into a house where Allah’s name is remembered. Greet its people with peace, honor the faith of your hosts, and let your presence be a sign of the mercy that Allah placed between the followers of Jesus and the followers of Muhammad ﷺ.

And Allah knows best. والله أعلم

Frequently asked questions

Is it haram to go to church with a friend?

No. Accompanying a Christian friend or relative to church is an act of kindness (birr) that the Quran encourages toward peaceful people of other faiths (60:8). You may sit respectfully, listen, and keep your own faith in your heart.

Can a Muslim take communion?

Communion is a Christian sacrament that expresses Christian belief about Jesus, and churches themselves usually reserve it for Christians. A Muslim guest can sit while others go forward, and many churches welcome visitors to come forward for a blessing instead.

What does Hanafi fiqh say about entering a church?

Some Hanafi jurists disliked entering churches, chiefly because of images and statues. The Hanbali school permits praying in a clean church without dislike in its preferred view, and Egypt's Dar al-Ifta holds that prayer in a church is valid.

Can Muslims hold Friday prayer in a church?

Yes. Muslims have prayed in church halls when they had no mosque, and the Ibn Rushd-Goethe Mosque in Berlin spent its first years in rooms of a Protestant church. The prayer is valid wherever the ground is clean.
