Can Muslims attend a Christian funeral or wedding?
Question 1244
Question
Is it permissible for a Muslim to attend the funeral or the wedding of a Christian friend, colleague, or relative, including the service in a church?
Summary of answer
Attending a Christian funeral or wedding is permissible and a fine act of kindness and kinship. The Prophet ﷺ stood for a passing Jewish funeral, saying 'Was it not a human soul?', and he sent Ali to bury his father Abu Talib, who died without professing Islam. The Quran commands kindness to peaceful people of every faith (60:8). A Muslim guest joins in what he can say sincerely and keeps a respectful silence through rites of Christian doctrine.
Answer
الحمد لله Praise be to Allah.

A Christian colleague’s mother has died. A cousin who married into a Christian family is getting married in a church. A convert’s grandparents are being laid to rest. Muslims receive these invitations often and wonder whether going is allowed. The answer of the Sunnah is warm and clear: Muslims can attend a Christian funeral or wedding, and their presence is an act of kindness (birr) and of keeping ties that Allah loves. A Muslim guest joins everything he can say and do sincerely and keeps a respectful silence through the rites of Christian doctrine.
Can Muslims attend a Christian funeral?
A funeral procession once passed by the Prophet ﷺ, and he stood up out of respect. Someone told him it was the funeral of a Jew. He answered:
«أَلَيْسَتْ نَفْسًا»
“Was it not a human soul?”
Two of his Companions, Sahl ibn Ḥunayf and Qays ibn Saʿd, kept this practice years later in Iraq: they stood for the funeral of a non-Muslim of that land and cited this hadith. Death is the meeting of every human soul with its Lord, and it deserves reverence whatever the faith of the one who has died.
The Sunnah goes further. When the Prophet’s uncle Abu Talib died, Ali came to tell him. Abu Talib had protected the Prophet ﷺ for decades and, as this report tells it, died without professing Islam. The Prophet ﷺ said to Ali:
«اذْهَبْ فَوَارِ أَبَاكَ»
“Go and bury your father.”
Sunan Abi Dawud 3214, graded sahih by al-Albani
A Muslim son attended to the burial of his father who died outside Islam, at the Prophet’s own command. A Muslim today may attend the service, follow the coffin to the cemetery, and stand with the family at the graveside.
What should a Muslim do at the service?
- Sit with the mourners, stand when they stand, and listen to the readings and hymns.
- Join prayers whose words you share: thanks to God, hope in His mercy, comfort for the bereaved. Many Christian prayers are words a Muslim can say with a full heart, and the question of saying “Amen” is answered in Can Muslims say “Amen,” “Hallelujah,” or “Oh my God”?
- Remain seated or silent during prayers addressed to Jesus as God, and do not take communion. No Christian family expects a guest of another faith to do so.
- Offer comfort. “I am so sorry for your loss” and “May God have mercy on her” are both fitting. The stronger view allows Muslims to ask Allah’s mercy for anyone who has died, as explained in Can Muslims pray for non-Muslims?
The Muslim customs of mourning, which Christian friends may ask about in return, are described in What do Muslims do when someone dies?
Can Muslims attend a Christian wedding?
Marriage is one of Allah’s signs for all of humanity:
وَمِنۡ ءَايَٰتِهِۦٓ أَنۡ خَلَقَ لَكُم مِّنۡ أَنفُسِكُمۡ أَزۡوَٰجٗا لِّتَسۡكُنُوٓاْ إِلَيۡهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيۡنَكُم مَّوَدَّةٗ وَرَحۡمَةً
“Among His signs is that He created spouses for you from among yourselves, so that you may find rest in them, and He placed love and mercy between you.”
A Christian couple’s wedding celebrates that sign. The Quran permits Muslims to marry Christians (5:5), and many Muslim families have Christian in-laws, so a Christian wedding is often a family occasion. A Muslim may attend the ceremony in the church, listen to the vows and readings, and celebrate at the reception. Entering and even praying in a church is permitted, as explained in Can Muslims go to church?
At the reception, a Muslim enjoys the meal, steps around pork and alcohol, and raises a glass of juice for the toasts. Music and dancing at a wedding are a joy the Sunnah welcomes. Bring a gift, sign the card, and dance with the bride’s aunt.
Does attending mean accepting Christian beliefs?
Presence is a gift of love, and it implies no change of creed. The Quran sets the rule for relations with peaceful people of other faiths:
“Allah does not forbid you to be kind and just to those who have not fought you over religion or driven you from your homes. Allah loves those who are just.”
When Asmāʾ bint Abī Bakr’s mother came to her while still holding to the old religion, the Prophet ﷺ told her to keep the bond (Sahih al-Bukhari 2620). Kindness at the great moments of a friend’s life, birth, marriage, and death, is exactly the kindness this verse describes. The same reasoning covers Christmas dinners and christenings (Is it haram for Muslims to celebrate Christmas?).
A closing word
People remember who came to their wedding and who stood beside them at a graveside. When a Muslim shows up in grief and in joy, with courtesy and a full heart, he shows his friends what the faith of Muhammad ﷺ looks like. May Allah comfort every family that mourns, bless every couple that marries, and make us a mercy to those around us.
And Allah knows best. والله أعلم
Frequently asked questions
Can a Muslim be a bridesmaid or best man at a Christian wedding?
Yes. Standing beside a friend on the happiest day of their life is an act of loyalty and love. A Muslim in the wedding party takes part in everything except rites of Christian doctrine such as communion.
Can Muslims say 'Rest in peace' or pray for a Christian who died?
Words of comfort to the grieving are a kindness, and the stronger view leaves Muslims free to ask Allah's mercy for anyone, as Abraham prayed for his father. 'May God have mercy on him' and 'Rest in peace' are both fitting.
Can a Muslim be a pallbearer at a Christian funeral?
Yes. The Prophet ﷺ sent Ali to bury his own father, Abu Talib, who died without professing Islam (Sunan Abi Dawud 3214). Carrying a friend or relative to the grave is an honor to the dead and a comfort to the family.
Can Muslims eat at a Christian wedding reception?
Yes. The food of the People of the Book is lawful (5:5). Pass over pork and alcohol, and raise a glass of juice or water for the toasts.
