Can a Muslim woman be lesbian?

Question 1125

Question

Is it haram for a Muslim woman to be lesbian, and may she love and build a life with another woman?

Summary of answer

A Muslim woman can be lesbian, and being lesbian is halal. The Quran says nothing about love between women: its story of Lot concerns men who assaulted male guests, and most classical exegetes read 4:15 as a verse about zina between a man and a woman. The four Sunni schools agreed that intimacy between women is not zina and carries no ḥadd. The stronger view holds that faithful relationships and marriages between women are permissible.

Answer

الحمد لله Praise be to Allah.

Sunlight through stained-glass windows throws pools of red, blue, green, and violet across the carpets between the carved columns of a dim prayer hall.

Lesbian Muslim women often grow up hearing about gay men in sermons and about women not at all, and they are left to wonder whether there is any place for them in their faith. There is. A Muslim woman can be lesbian, and being lesbian is halal. The Quran never mentions love between women, the classical jurists set no fixed penalty for it, and the stronger view (al-rājiḥ) holds that faithful relationships and marriages between women are permissible. A lesbian Muslim may pray, fast, love, and serve Allah as fully as anyone.

Is it haram to be a lesbian in Islam?

Being lesbian describes whom a woman loves and is drawn to. No one chooses it, and Allah asks of every soul only what it can bear (Quran 2:286). The question people really ask is about relationships, and there the scholars differed (ikhtalafa al-ʿulamāʾ). The classical schools held intimacy between women to be forbidden. The stronger view, built on a close reading of the Quran and set out in Is being gay haram?, holds that faithful same-sex love is halal. Everything said there about gay men applies to women, and the evidence for women is clearer still.

What does the Quran say about love between women?

Nothing. The story of Lot (peace be upon him), the passage most often quoted against gay people, describes men who tried to seize male guests and robbed travelers, and it says nothing about women. Only one verse is ever cited about women: 4:15, which speaks of women who commit a grave indecency (fāḥisha). Most classical exegetes, al-Tabari (d. 923) among them, read it as a verse about zina between a man and a woman, and held that its provisional ruling was replaced by later revelation. A few read it as concerning women together. On any reading, the verse sets no penalty in force today (What does the Quran say about homosexuality?).

What the Quran does say about love belongs to every believer:

وَمِنۡ ءَايَٰتِهِۦٓ أَنۡ خَلَقَ لَكُم مِّنۡ أَنفُسِكُمۡ أَزۡوَٰجٗا لِّتَسۡكُنُوٓاْ إِلَيۡهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيۡنَكُم مَّوَدَّةٗ وَرَحۡمَةً

“Among His signs is that He created for you partners from among yourselves, so that you may find rest in them, and He placed between you love and mercy.”

Quran 30:21

What did the classical scholars say about women who love women?

The jurists called intimacy between women siḥāq. The four Sunni schools agreed that it is not zina and carries no fixed (ḥadd) punishment; at most they allowed a judge’s discretionary penalty (taʿzīr), which has no place in any just law today. A report calling it “zina between women” circulates in later collections, but it appears in none of the six canonical hadith collections, and its chain is weak.

Muslim societies also wrote about love between women with more openness than many expect. Sahar Amer’s Crossing Borders (2008) traces stories of women who loved women in medieval Arabic literature, told by Muslim authors for Muslim readers. Lesbian Muslims today tell their own stories of faith in the collection Living Out Islam (2014) by Scott Siraj al-Haqq Kugle.

Can a lesbian Muslim pray, wear hijab, and marry?

Yes. Prayer, fasting, zakat, and pilgrimage belong to her as fully as to anyone. The Quran answers the believing women and men together:

أَنِّي لَآ أُضِيعُ عَمَلَ عَٰمِلٖ مِّنكُم مِّن ذَكَرٍ أَوۡ أُنثَىٰۖ بَعۡضُكُم مِّنۢ بَعۡضٖ

“I will not let the work of any of you go to waste, whether male or female; you are of one another.”

Quran 3:195

Whether she covers her hair is her own choice, as for every Muslim woman. Two women can marry with a nikah built on mutual consent, a mahr, witnesses, and good companionship (Can two Muslims of the same sex marry?).

What if my family pressures me to marry a man?

Many lesbian Muslim women face this pressure more than any sermon. A marriage contracted without a woman’s free consent is invalid: the Prophet ﷺ annulled the marriage of a woman whose father had married her off against her will (Is forced marriage allowed in Islam?). Parents owe their daughters mercy and closeness in every view of this question, and cutting off a child for being lesbian is haram (Is it permissible to disown your child for being gay?).

You do not have to carry this alone. Muslims for Progressive Values offers community in North America, Hidayah supports LGBT+ Muslims in the UK, and young people in the US can reach The Trevor Project at any hour. If you face threats at home, contact your local emergency number or a domestic-violence hotline.

A closing word

The One who placed love and mercy between hearts knows yours. May Allah grant you a home of tranquility, a partner who brings you nearer to Him, and a community that welcomes you as you are.

And Allah knows best. والله أعلم

Frequently asked questions

Is it haram to have feelings for another woman?

No. Attraction is not chosen, and the Prophet ﷺ taught that Allah has pardoned his community for what passes through their hearts (Sahih al-Bukhari 5269). The stronger view also holds faithful relationships between women to be halal.

What is the punishment for lesbianism in Islam?

The Quran sets none. The four Sunni schools agreed that intimacy between women is not zina and carries no fixed (ḥadd) penalty, and the report calling it "zina between women" has a weak chain.

Can a lesbian Muslim wear hijab?

Yes. Covering the hair is a personal choice open to every Muslim woman, and it is beautiful when chosen freely. A woman's sexuality has no bearing on her modesty or her worship.

Can two Muslim women marry?

The stronger view holds that they can, with a nikah built on mutual consent, a mahr, witnesses, and good companionship. Imams in several countries perform such marriages.
