Can Muslims celebrate Valentine's Day?

Question 1173

Question

Is it permissible for Muslims to celebrate Valentine's Day, give flowers, cards, or gifts, or go out with a spouse or partner on February 14?

Summary of answer

Celebrating Valentine's Day with a spouse or someone you love is halal. The Quran calls the affection and mercy between partners a sign of Allah (30:21), the Prophet ﷺ spoke openly of his love for Khadija and Aisha, and he taught that gifts create love. Today the day is a secular custom of cards, flowers, and dinners, and the stronger view is that a custom with no act of worship in it is permitted.

Answer

الحمد لله Praise be to Allah.

The stone bell tower of a desert monastery rises against a blue sky, and just behind it stands the white minaret of the mosque inside the monastery walls.

Every February, shop windows fill with red roses and Muslim couples wonder whether they may join in. The stronger view (al-rājiḥ) is that celebrating Valentine’s Day with your spouse, or with someone you hope to marry, is halal. Love between partners is one of the signs of Allah in the Quran, the Prophet ﷺ spoke of his love for his wives openly and tenderly, and a day of cards, flowers, and dinners is a custom that carries no act of worship.

What does Islam say about love between partners?

The Quran places married love among the signs that point to Allah, beside the creation of the heavens and the earth:

وَمِنۡ ءَايَٰتِهِۦٓ أَنۡ خَلَقَ لَكُم مِّنۡ أَنفُسِكُمۡ أَزۡوَٰجٗا لِّتَسۡكُنُوٓاْ إِلَيۡهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيۡنَكُم مَّوَدَّةٗ وَرَحۡمَةً

“Among His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves, so that you may find rest in them, and He placed between you affection and mercy.”

Quran 30:21

The Prophet ﷺ did not hide his love. When ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ asked him who was dearest to him of all people, he answered, “Aisha” (Sahih al-Bukhari 3662). He raced her while they were traveling and lost; when they raced again later and he won, he told her, “This one makes up for that one” (Sunan Abi Dawud 2578). Years after Khadija (may Allah be pleased with her) died, he still sent gifts of meat to her friends, and when Aisha teased him about her, he said: “I was given her love as a provision” (Sahih Muslim 2435b). His life with both women is described in Who was Khadija?

He also said:

«لَمْ نَرَ لِلْمُتَحَابَّيْنِ مِثْلَ النِّكَاحِ»

“For two people who love each other, nothing has been seen like marriage.”

Sunan Ibn Majah 1847, graded sahih by al-Albani

The scholars of Islam wrote about love with the same warmth. The jurist Ibn Hazm (d. 1064) of Córdoba wrote a whole book on it, The Ring of the Dove (Ṭawq al-Ḥamāma), and said that love is neither condemned by religion nor forbidden by the sharia, for hearts are in Allah’s hand.

Is Valentine’s Day a Christian holiday?

The day takes its name from Saint Valentine, a Christian martyr of early Rome, but its link with romantic love came much later, through medieval European poetry. Over the twentieth century it became a commercial and secular custom across the world, kept by people of every faith and none. Its cards and roses carry no prayer, creed, or rite.

The scholars differed (ikhtalafa al-ʿulamāʾ). Some contemporary scholars, especially in Saudi Arabia, forbid Valentine’s Day as imitation (tashabbuh) of non-Muslims and as a festival beside the two Eids, citing the hadith in which the Prophet ﷺ told the people of Medina that Allah had given them Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha in place of two days of play from before Islam (Sunan Abi Dawud 1134). That is a recognized view, and couples who hold it can show their love on any other day.

The stronger view rests on a basic rule of fiqh: in customs and daily life, the default is permission (al-aṣl fī al-ʿādāt al-ibāḥa) until a text forbids something. The Eid hadith established the religious festivals of Islam, and a day of flowers does not compete with them. Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta reasoned in a similar way about birthdays in its fatwa 4820, finding no legal impediment to marking them so long as such occasions are not named as feasts (aʿyād) (Is celebrating birthdays haram?). The same principle allows Muslims to share Christmas with family and neighbors (Is it haram to celebrate Christmas?).

Is it haram to give gifts on Valentine’s Day?

Giving gifts is a sunna, and the Prophet ﷺ tied it directly to love:

«تَهَادُوا تَحَابُّوا»

“Give gifts to one another, and you will love one another.”

al-Adab al-Mufrad 596, graded hasan by al-Albani

A rose, a card, a book of poetry, or a meal you cooked yourself are gifts in that spirit. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The best of you are those who are best to their families, and I am the best of you to my family” (Jamiʿ al-Tirmidhi 3895, graded sahih by al-Albani).

Can unmarried couples celebrate Valentine’s Day?

Getting to know someone you hope to marry is halal, as explained in Is dating haram?, and so are the feelings that come before it (Is having a crush haram?). A couple who are courting may mark the day with a card, a gift, or a dinner in a public place, with honesty about their intentions and with intimacy kept for the nikah. Muslims in same-sex relationships and marriages share the same sign of affection and mercy that Allah placed between partners (Can two Muslims of the same sex marry?).

How can Muslims mark the day well?

  • Make it personal. A letter in your own words means more than anything bought.
  • Keep it within your means. Love does not need debt or display.
  • Remember the lonely. A call to a widowed parent or a friend who is grieving carries the same love outward.
  • Do not wait for February. The Prophet ﷺ showed affection on ordinary days, and every day is open for kindness.

A garment for one another

The Quran describes spouses with one of its tenderest images:

هُنَّ لِبَاسٞ لَّكُمۡ وَأَنتُمۡ لِبَاسٞ لَّهُنَّ

“They are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them.”

Quran 2:187

A garment covers, warms, and adorns, and it is closest of all things to the body. May Allah fill every home with the affection and mercy He promised, and make the love between spouses a path to His own love.

And Allah knows best. والله أعلم

Frequently asked questions

Is Valentine's Day haram for married couples?

No. Spouses are commanded to live together in kindness (4:19), and a gift, a dinner, or a letter of love on any day of the year is part of that kindness. Many scholars who dislike the holiday itself still encourage spouses to show affection.

Is it haram to give gifts on Valentine's Day?

Giving gifts is a sunna that the Prophet ﷺ tied to love: 'Give gifts to one another, and you will love one another' (al-Adab al-Mufrad 596). Flowers and chocolates for a spouse, a parent, or a friend fall under that teaching.

Can I say Happy Valentine's Day?

Yes. It is a friendly greeting tied to a secular custom, and returning a greeting with a good word is part of the Quran's courtesy (4:86).

What is the Shia view on Valentine's Day?

Jaʿfari jurists, like the Sunni schools, hold that what no text forbids is permitted (aṣālat al-ibāḥa). On that principle, showing love to a spouse with gifts and kind words on February 14 is permitted, provided nothing forbidden is part of it.
