Is halal slaughter cruel?

Question 1094

Question

Is the Islamic method of slaughtering animals cruel, and do Muslims accept stunning before slaughter?

Summary of answer

Halal slaughter was given as a law of mercy: the Prophet ﷺ said Allah has prescribed excellence in everything, commanded a sharp blade, and asked that the animal be spared suffering. Classical jurists disliked any roughness toward the animal. Today many scholars and certifiers, including Malaysia's national standard and the UK's Halal Food Authority, accept reversible stunning that leaves the animal alive, and most halal-slaughtered animals in England and Wales are stunned. Cruelty in slaughter, transport, or farming is haram.

Answer

Praise be to Allah.

Is halal slaughter cruel? The question is asked by animal lovers, by legislators in Europe, and by Muslims who care about the animals whose meat they eat. The answer of the Sunnah is that halal slaughter was given as a law of mercy. The Prophet ﷺ commanded a razor-sharp blade, a swift cut, and an animal spared every needless fear and pain, and the jurists made any roughness toward the animal disliked. Today many scholars accept reversible stunning within these rules. Cruelty, whether at the moment of slaughter or in the way an animal is raised and transported, is haram.

What did the Prophet ﷺ teach about slaughtering animals?

The foundational hadith on slaughter opens with a principle for the whole of life:

«إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَتَبَ الإِحْسَانَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ فَإِذَا قَتَلْتُمْ فَأَحْسِنُوا الْقِتْلَةَ وَإِذَا ذَبَحْتُمْ فَأَحْسِنُوا الذَّبْحَ وَلْيُحِدَّ أَحَدُكُمْ شَفْرَتَهُ فَلْيُرِحْ ذَبِيحَتَهُ»

“Allah has prescribed excellence in everything. So when you kill, kill well, and when you slaughter, slaughter well. Let each of you sharpen his blade and spare his animal suffering.”

Sahih Muslim 1955a

The word for excellence, iḥsān (إحسان), is the same word the Prophet ﷺ used for the highest level of faith: to worship Allah as though you see Him. Slaughter is placed inside that same awareness of Allah.

A man once told the Prophet ﷺ that he felt pity for a sheep as he slaughtered it. The Prophet ﷺ answered:

«وَالشَّاةُ إِنْ رَحِمْتَهَا، رَحِمَكَ اللَّهُ»

“Even a sheep: if you show it mercy, Allah will show you mercy.”

al-Adab al-Mufrad 375

How is halal slaughter done?

The method (dhabḥ, ذبح) is a single swift cut across the front of the throat with a very sharp knife, severing the windpipe, the gullet, and the great blood vessels of the neck, while the slaughterer pronounces Allah’s name. The blood drains quickly, since the Quran forbids eating blood that has been poured out (6:145).

The classical manuals of fiqh surround this moment with courtesies. They count it disliked (makrūh) to drag an animal roughly to the place of slaughter, to sharpen the knife in front of it, to slaughter one animal in sight of another, or to cut through the spinal cord, skin the animal, or begin butchering before it is fully dead. A report in Sunan Ibn Majah says the Prophet ﷺ ordered blades to be sharpened and hidden from the animals (Sunan Ibn Majah 3172); its chain is weak, but the jurists’ rules carry the same spirit. The animal should be rested, watered, and handled gently.

The Quran reminds believers why they slaughter in Allah’s name at all:

لَن يَنَالَ ٱللَّهَ لُحُومُهَا وَلَا دِمَآؤُهَا وَلَٰكِن يَنَالُهُ ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ مِنكُمۡ

“Their flesh does not reach Allah, nor their blood. What reaches Him is your devotion.”

Quran 22:37

Saying bismillah over an animal is an acknowledgment that its life belongs to Allah and is taken only with His permission, for need, and with gratitude. This is the spirit of the Eid sacrifice as well (What are Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha?).

Why do some animal-welfare groups call halal slaughter cruel?

The modern objection concerns stunning. In most Western slaughterhouses, animals are made unconscious by an electric current or a captive bolt before their throats are cut. Animal-welfare scientists debate how quickly an animal loses consciousness after a neck cut without stunning, and studies suggest it varies by species and by the skill of the cut. Several European countries require stunning for all slaughter, and in December 2020 the Court of Justice of the European Union allowed member states to impose that rule, upholding a ban in the Flemish region of Belgium.

A poorly performed slaughter, with a dull blade, a hesitant cut, or a frightened animal, is cruel. It is also a violation of the Sunnah, which demands the opposite of all three.

Is stunning allowed in halal slaughter?

The scholars have differed (ikhtalafa al-ʿulamāʾ). The Quran forbids an animal killed by strangling or by a blow:

وَٱلۡمُنۡخَنِقَةُ وَٱلۡمَوۡقُوذَةُ وَٱلۡمُتَرَدِّيَةُ وَٱلنَّطِيحَةُ وَمَآ أَكَلَ ٱلسَّبُعُ إِلَّا مَا ذَكَّيۡتُمۡ

“…and what is strangled, beaten to death, killed by a fall, gored, or partly eaten by a wild beast, unless you slaughter it while it still lives.”

Quran 5:3

Some scholars and certifiers therefore reject stunning, worried that a stun may kill some animals before the cut and turn them into carrion. Many others accept reversible stunning, which leaves the animal alive and able to recover if it is not slaughtered, because the animal then dies by the cut and the stun spares it fear and pain. Malaysia’s national halal standard, MS 1500, permits electrical or percussive stunning on the conditions that the animal is alive at the moment of slaughter and the stun neither kills it nor injures it permanently, though it does not recommend stunning. In Britain the Halal Food Authority certifies stunned meat, while the Halal Monitoring Committee does not. A 2018 Food Standards Agency survey found that most animals slaughtered by the halal method in England and Wales were stunned first, about four in five cattle and two in three sheep.

The stronger view is that reversible stunning, when it is verified that the animal is alive at the cut, is compatible with the sharia and serves the very iḥsān the Prophet ﷺ commanded. Muslims who prefer unstunned meat follow a recognized opinion too, and both should insist on skilled slaughtermen and sharp blades.

Does Islam care how animals live before slaughter?

The Sunnah’s mercy covers the whole of an animal’s life. The Prophet ﷺ once entered a garden in Medina where a camel wept at the sight of him. He stroked its head until it calmed, then found its owner and said:

«أَفَلاَ تَتَّقِي اللَّهَ فِي هَذِهِ الْبَهِيمَةِ الَّتِي مَلَّكَكَ اللَّهُ إِيَّاهَا، فَإِنَّهُ شَكَى إِلَىَّ أَنَّكَ تُجِيعُهُ وَتُدْئِبُهُ»

“Do you not fear Allah concerning this animal that Allah has placed in your care? It has complained to me that you starve it and wear it out.”

Sunan Abi Dawud 2549

Cramped cages, long transport without water, and animals bred until their legs cannot carry them raise the same question the Prophet ﷺ asked that camel’s owner. A halal label on meat from a cruel farm satisfies only the last minute of the animal’s life. Muslims who seek out humanely raised meat, or who eat less meat, are following this Sunnah (Can Muslims be vegetarian?; What does Islam say about animals?). The same ethic forbids killing animals for amusement (Is hunting for sport haram?), and it explains why Muslims may also eat the carefully slaughtered meat of the People of the Book (Can Muslims eat kosher or non-halal-certified meat?).

Every meal of meat is a life given for ours. May Allah make us people of iḥsān at every table, grateful for what He provides and merciful to the creatures He placed in our care.

And Allah knows best.

Frequently asked questions

Is stunned meat halal?

Many scholars hold that it is, provided the stun is reversible, the animal is still alive when its throat is cut, and the slaughter is done by a Muslim or a person of the Book with Allah's name. Malaysia's halal standard and the UK's Halal Food Authority accept stunning on these conditions, while some certifiers accept only unstunned meat.

Is halal slaughter the same as kosher slaughter?

They are close. Both require a very sharp blade, a single swift cut across the throat by a trained person, and the draining of blood. Scholars accept kosher meat as halal for Muslims.

Why is the blood drained in halal slaughter?

The Quran forbids eating blood that has been poured out (6:145). Cutting the major vessels of the neck drains it quickly and also brings the fastest loss of consciousness.

Is it haram to watch or film an animal being slaughtered?

Watching is permitted, and some families attend the Eid sacrifice. Out of mercy, other animals should not be made to watch, and the blade should be kept out of the animal's sight.
